Getting a feel for disc at 80

I've recently gotten my priest to 80, and I'm working on a shadow set but healing in heroics for quick badges. My healing spec of choice is disc although I remain a little unsure if I'm doing it correctly.
My usual game plan is to shield the tank every time possible, and when their is minor damage on the tank or a dps I usually slap a renew on them, plus a shield if I think it's needed. Prayer of mending is used occasionally, but for the most part if people start taking more damage than I think shield and renew can handle, I start using penance and flash heal.
I could be way off base here on my style, any tips or advice would be GREATLY appreciated.

Seems decent enough for heroics, but try to keep DA in the back of your mind all the time.

Use PoM on every CD (unless it's still on the tank after the CD).
Keep WS (PW:S) up on tank at all times.
Only Renew a target with 3x Grace, normally, a tank, after a Penance.
Depending on your tank, you can easily get by most heroics using only PW:S and PoM. Throw both on the tank before any pull, refresh PW:S as soon as the WS debuff comes down, refresh PoM every time you hear it jumping off the tank. Pre-shielding anyone you expect to be taking damage, or even keeping the entire grouped shielded all the time isn't a bad idea, if you can afford it.
