While MI does indeed do damage, albeit not that much, damage output is not the primary function of the spell. Once cast, you effectively mask your threat for the duration of the images' lives. It's best used when your threat is going to be the greatest an issue; usually at the start of a raid boss pull or during an empowered state, like Heroism/Bloodlust, combined with other buffs where you may risk pulling off the tank.
The only thing to remember is that once the effect wears off, your threat will return to the level it would be as if you had never cast it, so it's important that your tank isn't slacking either.
When you obtain 4pcT10, MI will effectively become an aggressive cooldown, best saved for the same empowered states (or whenever it's up).

Yes, Mirror Image indeed only mask your threat for spell duration, your aggro is always there.
If you managed to draw aggro from tank (which is really hard as arcane with proper tank, in raid situation) Invisibility is the only real aggro reset CD. Ice Block doesnt reset aggro aswell.
MI frostbolt damage scales with current SP, so basically you 'd want to put MI in /macro after your SP modificators. But actually it isnt That dps increase to even consider.

That is the reason I pull out every CD including MI at the start of every boss-pull.
You can start by going all out and still give the tank a chance to gain some threat. Since the longest CD is 3 mins, they usually wear off just time for a BL/Heroism.
You should only consider MI a DPS gain due to the fact that for a short time you don't have to worry at all about threat. And as Fyuu said, with a proper tank, that's really only an issue the first 10 seconds of a fight.

Correct me if I am wrong, but you are saying that my threat continues to generate for the duration of MI. Thus meaning, MI only 'masks' my threat level temporarily?
Correct.
Several occasions, I've popped everything and ended up at ~90% threat once the 30 seconds are up. The idea of the spell is that it stops you from pulling aggro
in that 30 seconds
which by then, the tank should have generated a sufficient aggro lead. Tanks typically should be putting out more TPS than you. If they aren't, then you're going to be in trouble.

Q: Would I be inaccurate in my assumption that opening up with MI on bosses and large AoE pulls, that may result in an aggro pull, is the best situations to use it in?
Thats a correct assumption. Mages never considered MI as dps boost, its very useful tool for managing your aggro. Situation changed though since T10 4p set bonus gives tasty 18% overall damage for 30 seconds after using MI.
