What do I have to do to get onto a EU realm as someone in the US? Is it open for me to just start a DK on there or do I need to have a special EU wow client or keys for it?

As far as I know you need the EU version and they EU keys.

Not really the smartest thing to "simply" changing the realmlist file. I played on the EU realms on an US installation, and then suddenly I saw that the size of the new patch was different between my own and my friends' installations -- lo and behold, I wasn't able to play on the EU realms anymore and had to reinstall from scratch via my Account Management page.
So... simplest way is:
1. Get an EU account (EU key pretty much) by buying it online via
http://wow-europe.com
.
2. Download the installer through the Account Management page.
3. Install.
4. Upgrade the patches that aren't included in the installment package, as you would with a normal patch.
5. Log in with EU account.
6. ?
7. Profit.
PS. Tip: Install on a separate location than the US installment, in the case of you wanting to be able to play on both versions.

This really is the best way to go about playing on EU realms.

We have significantly different clients over here in the EU.
No random name generator for a start.
Aside from that, as has been said, the two sets of server farms are completely isolated, and managed by two seperate branches of the same company.
We also have differences in our TOU, particularly when it comes to things like casinos, and promotions.
