To be honest, it shouldn't be actively seeked out as a stat. However, it shouldn't be actively avoided too much either because you may end up with some wasted hit gear.
Spirit and Mp5 offer regen which Disc priests often forget about, thinking about "Int is king, int is king!" Yes, intellect is the best source of regen for us at the moment, but the other two support your regen greatly.
Basically - Don't only pick spirit upgrades, but having some pieces of spirit gear will not kill you.

Don't put any effort into avoiding the stat, the higher your Intellect, the better Spirit gets... Simply pick sidegrades that are better itemized when possible. Merlin's Robe is way better than Flowing Vestments of Ascent, not because Merlin's has no Spirit, but because it has one more socket, more Haste and, above anything else, Crit rating.
That sticky was last updated in April 2009, I'll guess at that moment, gear level in general didn't allow for as high mana pools as now, but even with only 20k mana, Spirit still is a Regen stat, which is vital to any healer, Holy specced Priests benefit more from it, but that doesn't mean we don't.

I don't gem for spirit/mp5 except for the one slot to activate the IED meta...Just use whatever is on the gear that you get and that should be sufficient. If you are going oom try using some Sp/Int gems, but while I was gearing up, and now raiding ICC and such, I have more than enough regen from gear.
Also, merlin's robe is a lot better for disc now only because it switches the spirit for Crit. Disc loves crit. Plus you gain an extra socket.
Edit: I looked at some other threads before replying. Panik's post wasn't on here yet on the one I had up...basically what he said

one way that may help is to think of it like this
Spirit is something disc is NOT sad to see leave.
this works as long as your current content does not make you OOM.
The discussion of what T10 peices disc should take also might make an interesting reference here, in that ALL of the T10 healing has spirit on it. Should disc really avoid taking it? The answer lies in that if you do take all T10, lose your mana regen or spirit on all other gear, especially trinkets, this will make it so that you are not "swamped" in useless spirit, but rather have a good balance for regen purposes.
