The last time I let someone "Need" on a boe item, it was the Tankard O' Terror from the brewfest boss. This DK won not 1 but 2 of them on "Need" rolls, then equipped them to show us he wasn't going to sell them. Only problem was, when we inspected him, both the tankards had runes on them already (for those not familiar with DKs, this means using the runeforge at Acherus - in other words, he had them in his bags already and his "Need" rolls were just pure greed).
Since then, if I don't know you, you don't get the benefit of the doubt. If you really want that boe item so badly you can win the roll, or drop some gold at the AH.
*Edit* For the people claiming "Need before greed" even on boe items, I just ask this. Why should the guy who actually bothered to work on his gear, buying boe's and enchants etc, lose out to the lazy guy who only does random dungeons in the hopes of winning something equippable. Why should those who put less effort into their character have a greater chance of winning something that the whole group earned?

Because anyone who doesn't want to encourage laziness is greedy. Am I greedy for keeping the money I earn from my job, too? I mean, there's people begging on the street who need it more, right? I should just give it to them because they have less, even though they've been sat in the same spot all day while I've been grafting.

not to be a &*!@ but in about 3 hrs of running random dailies u can have an awsome level 245 trink from badges. i would have hit need on it too. and probally would have called you a noob.
If you need spell power, 128 intellect with an on-use spell power effect won't help that much, other than every two minutes.

Today I was running Gundrak on my druid and Je'tezs Bell drops (spelling). The tank said in cpas lock "EVERYBODY NEED" I protested saying it was an huge upgrade to me and I should get it. He then said "I could sell this for 2k gold on the AH so STFU", After about 5 minutes of arguing I lost and it went to some rogue.
Was the tank right by telling everybody to need it? I mean gold is so easy to get right now it shouldn't be an issue at all.. i mean 2k gold can easily be obtained in 1 day if you know what u are doing. the trinket I wanted it to replace is
http://www.wowhead.com/?item=37844
. It is a sweet trinket and is quite good for starting 25 man raids (which I am about to do)
So was I right by trying to get the trinket or was the tank right by telling everybody to need on it.
BTW

<--------- this is the trinket that dropped
If 2k gold is so easy to get in 1 day, you should already have this trinket (purchased from the AH), along with every other BOE epic for your class/spec.

im sorry but BoE epics should be needed on by all... if you really want the trinket go buy it
