I'm not so sure an insult was implied there, simply a statement that being under 18 doesn't make you an immature jackass. Which many could be, but there are quite a few who aren't.

You don't think that calling someone a "kid" just judging by his/her age is an insult? :P
Well, IMO, it is. Maturity ain't something that you can scale with age that much.
I know some 15 years old people, who are more mature than some 30 years old friends of mine. Honestly.
If someone is an idiot when he's/she's 16 years old, he/she will be, pretty much, an idiot for the rest of his/her life, that's the age when you kind of become the person you are.
On topic:
No, it isn't smart to let a six-years-old heal in end-game raid, if you don't have a guild event called "Wipefest" for that day. Yeah, i read that "most of the children are 10-14 years old", but "help the glowing man fight the dragon" ain't something that a 10 years old would say. :o

Well, sometimes i let my 7 years old sister play, but i tell her to make her own character..
If you let a kid to play alone into a raid and that kid has completly no experience that's pretty stupid in my opinion, specially if it is a healer or tank.
Really, letting kids play its not that bad just give them the chance to start from the very beggining and see how the game goes , in maybe a year they should be ready to "patricipate"in a raid environment, specialy nowdays that half of fights are "get away from the bad things on floor" if you get what i mean..

only problems i have with younger people playing (10- lets say 15) is how much they talk in vent and how easy it is to upset them, i have seen many of the youngsters pull more than there weight in raids

This game is rated teen didn't your mommy look at the rating when she bought it for you?
Teen rated in America. Surprisingly, not everywhere uses the same ratings as the US.
12+ Where I live, and presumably across the rest of Europe.
On topic, it depends on the child. It really does depend. However, kids shouldn't be forced into playing games which suck a lot of their youth away because the parents can't be arsed to parent and dump them infront of a TV or Computer from a young age. Old habits die hard too.

There's a T on the side of the box for a reason.
yes, it means people who are teenagers, or people who
have the maturity of a 7-year old
should not play this game. I now declare that anyone who says kids are immature to be a racist loser, unless each individual child has actually displayed immaturity worthy of this racism.
um, racism deals with races not maturity/age.. please try again :)

12- is going to have a problem grasping this game obviously for the most part.
12-16 depends on the player(At the age of 13-14 I mostly took +16 or +18 games...+12games were games I completed in 1 day time ffs.
Now at the age of 18 I stil get treated the same as 2years back when I first started. Don't think I became any bit more mature in-game. I stil talk to much and I stil like #$%^ing of people. I stil don't know the meaning of the word "tact" and the people who hated me 2years ago wil stil hate me and vica versa.
Hell I was discussing some theocrafting with a freaking 15year old while I thought he was 20+ -_-.

Well, in my opinion, letting a child create their own character isn't absolutely terrible, but letting said child run a raid in place of his parent with little or no knowledge as of what to do, isn't such a hot idea.
Wtf? Why on earth is that terrible?

I started playing when I was eleven (shortly after release). I think letting your kids play is fine, but you should have them roll their own characters. I dont remember being hurt/confused at all by the swearing (or barrens chat either D:).

NOTE: This is a comment based on personal experience. If you hate that kind of thing, don't bother reading. :p
Imo opinion you're thinking more about yourself than you are the children. They should play if they want to play, not because you need a tank. Is it okay if you ask them to play in order to receive help from them? - Imo sure, as long it's because 'they' want too.
Hell I remember when I began playing, I wasn't exactly a "kid", but yea I was pretty noob and inexperienced. Ofc they will be as well and I don't think your newest members will be main tanking the raidbosses when they hit 80. But then again. That's where their parents come in assist their kids.

its not the age that matters, its how muture the player is, a kid who is 10 years old can be muture enough as a adult. and yes, some adults ccan act immature. letting kids play wow at a young age is ok, just make sure you can read what he/she is posting or saying on vent. you don't your children to start swearing around the house
