that's true, but FFB is a 3 second cast, whereas frostbolt is a 2.5s cast (before haste of course)
and the damage done by the DoT of FFB is negligible.. if you want the snaring affect, cast a frostbolt, if you want the dot, cast a fireball.. they're both, individually better than a FFB..
Check arcane sublevty. It protects "DOT and Helpful effects on you by 35%".
Frostbolt / Slow are not considered DOT nor Helpful effects, so they don't get dispell protection.
Frostfirebolt, However, is a DOT, so it gets the 35% dipsel protection. It's technically the only Snare wich benefits from the 35% dispel protection we have.
i wasn't referring to the dispel protection.. you said that FFB is a a dot and a snare effect, and i was pointing out that fireball and frostbolt are better at either of those for different reasons. I know slow and FB won't be protected by dispel protect, but I just think that FFB is kind of a crappy spell for PvP. Fireball hits harder, frostbolt is cast quicker.

i'm keeping this bumped up.... i don't want you all to think i've forgotten about it. it's been a crazy week, with finals and all that.. i needed the weekend to recover and spend some time playing other classes to see how their mechanics work as well.
i plan on keeping this up and will get back to work on it again tomorrow.. hopefully it won't take long for posts to get erasesd so i can expand.. thanks again to everyone for all of your awesome suggestions.. this thread wouldn't exist without you guys.

What do you think about mine build and glyphs?
Here you are:
http://www.wowhead.com/?talent#ocLifzdcdcGuMtedZbIM0o:pNm0o
couple questions... if you're going so deep in arcane, why get ice shards?
personally, i think the 5 points in mind mastery would be much better spent in arcane mind.. increased SP isn't gonna help you as much if your mana pool is small, and arcane is notoriously very mana heavy.
precision and arcane focus..... meh... i'm not a terribly huge fan of those talents for pvp.. granted, with the 5 points spent there, it reduces mana cost by 5%, but i think you'd almost be better off finding a way to talent yourself into Frost Channeling.. 3 points for 10% (but, you'd have to put 4 more points in frost just to get them... so idk)
only one point in imp. counterspell? you'll sneeze and the 2s is over with... i know this because it seems like i sneeze and the 4s is over with when you have both points in it.
As far as your glyphs go, those are all solid choices. Arcane blast might be a bit of an iffy one since standing and casting may not happen as often as you like.. are you shooting for arenas or BGs with this setup?

here is mine build after correcting it.
Thanks
btw. If someone thinks that 20/00/51 is the best build for PvP I won't agree. I was in Frost for like 1 month and doing Bg's in it. Imo it's terrible and I can't stand it. Arcane is better wa for PvP in my opinion.
as far as which spec is "better" it's all situational.. if you don't like going deep frost, then don't.. it's all in your personal play style.. you may do better as arcane, and that's your prerrogative. that's the great thing about pvp. :)
Anyway, as for your corrected talent tree.. it looks better, although I think i'd agree with open.. if you want to use filler to get to icy veins, you might be better off with 3/3 precision and 2/2 frost warding (for those pesky frost mages, as well as DKs). Blizzard is a terrible spell for pvp cause it's you're most mana expensive spell, and leaves you ridiculously vulnerable for too long while it's being cast. I think if you DO want to use it on occasion, you may try to find another point and throw it into imp. blizzard, cause adding the slow effect to it makes it a much better spell.

Great guide so far guys, but ive noticed that there has been no mention about pvp gear at all.
As of right now i have frostsavage set and is currently working on my Gladiator set.
So which gems, enchants, trinkets, and wepons should i be getting for pvping?
it's still a work in progress.. the pvp gear willl be coming soon once i get several more placeholders..
i sent the email to the address that dant suggested, but nothing yet.. /sigh

Ok thanks for suggestion. Now I will go with Frost Warding, the problem is that I really don't know how this works (I played a mage for 1,5 year) and never had this talent with any build I had. Can you tell a little about it ? Is it really good for pvp I mean better than Ice Shards?
Ty
Why would you even want ice shards? You're never using frost spells, ever. PoM is better spent on Arcane Blast or Polymorph.
Anyways, Frost Warding offers a 30% chance to completely negate a spell's damage (according to the ward type) and convert the damage it WOULD have done, into mana. Sounds solid to me.

QFT..
ice shards is ONLY good in pvp if you're a frost mage.. plain and simple.

Just have Open and the other commenters delete their comments below the guide.
That means you, Open.
i just got the email from Malgayne. he said he wasn't comfortable deleting other people's posts, so he suggests that I just create a new thread with all of the content and linking it to here... I think i'd almost rather do that, that way I can create more placeholders for myself after all of the info I have is up and running.. So.... that's what i'm going to do. Maybe I can work on the formatting some and make it look cleaner and more easy to navigate through in the process.

Okay folks.. I just put up the all new, re-formatted
Mage PvP Guide - Redux
.
Any future posts should go there instead of here. and, if at all possible, if a mod is shambling around, could you possibly lock this one down? :) Thanks again to everyone who made this guide possible.

uhmm, as a former-hunter joining the mage community, i must say your tactics against a hunter are very weak.
Nobody plays BM anymore in pvp becaus TBW is reduced to 10 sec duration. just ice block immediatly then. seconds, if you play against a MM hunter, you can get yourself interrupted quite a few times. Silencing shot can be doubled by a SS - readiness -SS combo, meaning 6 seconds of silence.

Maybe because the last time this was updated, it was still patch 3.1

all of these tactics are for Frost based mages...
Can you maybe start a seperate thread for fire based mages?
I am invested all into Fire, and plan to stay that way
