The Sumali Pirate Situation
Return to board index
Post by
Queggy
I assume most of you know about the Sumali Pirates, and who they have been stealing and murdering for about two years now. The US has done nothing about the situation, while other nations have clamored for response. Well yesterday (or the other day) a US ship was finally captured. Out Secretary of State said that this was a serious matter, and that they would look into doing something about it. This makes my head hurt. I firmly believe that we should send in a submarine and blow them out of the water. These people have extorted millions and billions of dollars out of people and have killed many people, and yet our government wants to deal with these people. In my opinion, the day we start dealing with criminals like these is the day we become criminals ourselves.
Discuss.

No.
I just know that we can't barter with these people. Don't appease them and give them the money they are ransoming these people for. Don't get me wrong, I want the captain and his crew to be returned safely, but we can't allow these petty criminals push around our government.

Look at their side of the situation. I am not saying this is right. but SOmaila is a very poor country. I read an article about them way before they attacked US ships (in the magazine Newsweek) and they were talking about how their men must do this to earn any money at all because of their situation (like most African countries).

Pirates are the holy emissaries of the Flying Spaghetti Monster. To harm them in any way would be to bring about the wrath of The Noodly One.
Plus, having more pirates means less global warming. Which is good.

Remember though, the US have other things to do elsewhere (the Middle-East, for example) and if only 1 ship has been affected, I doubt they'll do much. The countries affected should try to do something themselves.
I heard on the news they fought back, and have taken control of the ship.

I still don't condone their actions. They should be able to leave their counrty (easier said than done) and find honest work somewhere else than make a fool out of themselves and their entire nation.

If there were a 0 money gain from pirating, and every single pirate were flogged to death while strung up on a metal post.... then there would be no more pirates.
And the arguements that they are poor victems... they kill other people during thier pirating. They are not a poor gentle people.
You publically punish 10-15 of the pirates.... then the effects of no more pirates save countless innocent people. Imagine if one of those innocent people were someone you loved, murdered for money.
Kill every one of those pirates, publically, expediantly, painfully.

So you'd be okay with a man walking into, say, your house and taking your family hostage because he's poor and/or unemployed?
I don't think thats what he's saying. I think he's just pointing out their POV to try and get two sides in this discussion.

WHAT IS THIER POV.... Put yourself in thier shoes and see WHAT? That they are murdering deranged greedy crimals? What is thier view? What is thier justification? Put yourself in the shoes of a murdered victim instead, or of one of the starved hostages. Put yourself in THOSE shoes. You hippie idiot.

That's a bit over the top, but something along these lines has to be done.

Still though, you shouldn't fight violence with violence.. that's an obvious.
WHAT! If someone kills your parents, do you give them a cookie and ask them to be nice?

I'd have to agree with you there. As much as I love pirates, these pirates are not endorsing the proper buccaneer-spirit that makes a pirate a pirate. In fact, I would not even call them pirates. These guys are nothing more than sea-based murderers.

Sometimes it's necessary EluraE. If America had just said to Germany during WW2,
"Hey guys! We love you man! Violence is bad, so we're going to let you take over the world!"
Then we would be speaking Deutsch right now.
