I have been having exactly the same upload issues.
The problems started immediately after I upgraded AVG 7 to AVG 8.5.
I am happy to report:
AVG ver 8.5.287 Solution found
Solution Walk-through:
Right-click the AVG systray icon (bottom right corner by the clock)
Click: "Open AVG User Interface"
Right-click: "Link scanner"
Click: "Open"
Under the heading: "Settings", all 3 check boxes will be checked ("proper" default install)
Change the check boxes to the following settings:
Enable AVG Search-shield (need web browser restart)
Enable AVG Active Surf-shield
Enable reporting of detected threats to AVG
Click: "Save Changes"
Close the AVG User interface window
Click back to this page and copy the URL (for later use, report success, fail, etc)
Close all browser windows
Open the Wowhead Client and upload your dataZ :D
... You're welcome ;) (in advance)
Open the web browser of your choice
Paste the URL to bring you back to this page
Please let me know if this helped you ;)
Posting your info here will help the devs find a solution to the problem.
Detailed "Fix" steps will help them replicate the issue/solution.
Don't be shy, I'm sure they want to help, they just need
us
to give them
Good DataZ
to point them in the right direction.
Thanks, Good hunting, and glad to help folks :)

With NOD32 v4 you can disable the HTTP checking just for Wowhead in the following way:
Go to the setup tab
Click on Toggle advanced mode
Answer Yes to the advanced mode question
Click on enter entire advanced tree
(Enter the password for nod32 if you have one set)
Expand Web Access Protection node
Expand HTTP,HTTPS node
Click on Web Browsers
A list of all http clients will show in the right hand pane.
Find wowhead_client.exe in the list
Click on the check box until it has a red cross in it.
Click on OK and close NOD32
You should no longer have to keep switching off all web protection each time you want to use wowhead.
Hopefully this will help! It worked for me :)

this is the solution for AVG users! wanted this one like 6 months ago ;D
It is not the solution. It never worked for me and I had to figure out how to do it. It is partly a solution for some people.
If this doesn't work for anyone, then please read my posts
here
.
I feel like I have found a temporary solution to this problem with AVG only (sorry guys) but if your read one of my last posts I am sure that other anti-viruses have more or less the same solution.

Hi there, I think I have the same problem, with a small difference.
With me, if the file which is to be uploaded is small enough (ie when it only contains data about my character), it works correctly. But I do have the same issue as the others when its size is greater than ~20 kb.
I'm running Seven Ultimate 64 bits, with Kaspersky 2009. I tried changing my DNS provider, didn't solve. Same with desactivating Kaspersky (or/and adding the client to the exclusion lists). TraceRTs and pings to upload.wowhead.com are OK. I'll try investigating my router firewall (i'm using a Netgear DG834N), but I don't think the problem comes from here.
A small particularity to my system, which is not supposed to interact, but hey... I do have a RAID0 with 2 SSDs, Windows is installed on one partition, WoW and the client are on another.

Thanks for the Nod32 support in this thread. You just made my day!

Maybe we should take all these AV fixes, and put them in a nice little thread, so people like me don't have to spend the last hour wading through pages of threads. :)

For those with ESET NOD32 - I had the same problem on windows XP
What I did:
1. Disable Firewall
2. Uninstall client and removing addon folder and reset computer
3. Reinstalled client.
4. No profit, it still didn't work.
5. Opened up NOD32 (version 4 btw) and activated "Advanced tools".
6. Under "Setup" Press Antivirus and Antispyware.
7. "Edit Exclusions" under Real Time File System Protection
8. Press "add..." and navigate to your Wowhead client file and choose it.
9. PROFIT :) It works flawlessly now.
Thanks AVG users who gave me the clue to execlude it. Hope this helps someone else.

We're trying to find a fix for this. But even big companies like Valve/Steam ask you to make exceptions with disabling AV software—see
here
. If we can't figure out a fix on our end, we'll come up with an FAQ to try and make it as simple as possible.
