As someone who almost never has the sound on (I usually play on the laptop next to my sleeping wife) my vote is for Power Auras for this sort of thing - I used to watch my bars all the time but now I use power auras I can keep my eyes on the fight and wait for either my bright green shield or white spikes to appear for Shield Slam and Revenge respectively (I'm prot not fury). I do use it in combination with SCT for that double reminder.
Event alert is a visual clue too, and can be placed anywhere on the screen. By default it's right at the centre, so you won't really have to look away from the combat to see it. I haven't tried power auras, so I don't know which is better - I do know that I like event alert a lot, especially because it works on all your alts right out of the box.

I tend to use my ears to tell me when to Bloodsurge.
Bloodsurge makes a very distinctive sound when it procs....once you train yourself to listen for it, slam procs become less of a problem.
The problem with that is that in a raid, things can get very noisy, what with a whole raid's worth of spells, abilities and procs making their individual sounds, with the boss doing whatever he does too, and with your voice comms chiming in if you use that.

I use slam alert honestly,
message on screen and yells the word "PERFECT!" in your ear
you'll never miss a slam again... though you may lose some hearing
I also use this.
Once you get used to the "Perfect" sound you'll be fast as hell on the slam button.
True, after a while it goes without thinking.

Event Alert
This is what I personally use, it's very good and very obvious.
