Horde was more mature before TBC. When TBC was out thousands of alli players rolled Noob Elves. You get the idea...

I believe the maturity rumor began a long time ago in the days of pre-BC. Back then it would make sense that the majority of hordies were mature, or at least adult players, as the horde was rather ugly and had a harder time with leveling (due to the fact that after 20 horde leveling zones are just plain all over the place). I would say this because younger people are less likely to want to play characters who look like evil monsters (exaggeration, I know, but still) or characters that are frustrating to level, as a younger or less mature individual will most likely lack the patience to stick with it for any long period of time.
However, with the appearance of the pretty blood elves in BC and their simplified leveling zones (not to mention Blizz reducing the amount of exp to level later on) the Horde side became far more appealing to a younger crowd. And now, with DKs starting at level 55 the filter that used to discourage the younger crowd from becoming Horde is all but gone. So now there really isn't any difference between factions. The ratio of immature players to mature players is about the same for both sides.
Well, that's the theory anyways. The only other way I could account for faction differences is when there is far more of one faction on a pvp server than another (which would create the appearance of more mature/immature players on the larger faction depending on how many people you interact with, and discourage casual/impatient players from leveling on the smaller faction side, as they would be far less likely to put up with all the ganking from the other side).
Hope this was at least an interesting read for those who could barrel through it :)
