Just as the English language itself has been butchered, changed and expanded upon for real world communication- so goes MMO speak. Compound that with the ever expansion of the WoW universe to include those who do not speak English or have knowledge beyond say a 7th grade level. Unfortunately, as this language evolves it will only get worse not better and as more and more people speak like idiots there will be more of them to group together and not be ignored.
I'm always amazed by the people who cannot use their/there/they're in the proper context. But it easy to be critical when you're a college graduate and actually require language, grammar and communication to make your ends in the real world.
And no- I don't talk like an idiot in WoW... Just on Wowhead.

I don't agree at all. For me the evolution of leet speak has always been interesting. it's alot easier to talk then to type, faster too. So why would be expect people to take their time and write every word down when they can use their own shorter or more fluid terms when we do the same thing in real life, I doubt that anyone on wow has NEVER used a shortened word in real life. "Can you hand me the remote?" Note that "remote
control
" was not used and even that is shortened from "remote control
er
". Don't bash people because they get their point across differently.
It is alot easier to type, "lol, that noob was fail" than "it was funny that the player who was new to the game had no idea what they were doing"

Some people can type fast or slow and still get their point across without sounding like an idiot. I was not degrading the "evolution" of MMO speak, I've been learning and ignoring all that I can.
"Epic PHAIL" is not shorthand for anything.
"Newbtard" is just plain rude.
Many others are equally appalling and reflect my attitude from my earlier post. Some still make perfect sense and why would a person not want to get a point across faster? But others are just a devolution of language and social behavior and are in no way "LEET"

I generally don't mind if others shorten words so that they write faster. What I don't like is the need to decipher some sentences, or the incoherent series letters which doesn't even form a sentence. If someone whispers me with "tank up kk?" I am tempted to decline no matter how much I want to do the said instance. The same ting applies to leaving an instance. Writing "has to go naxx bb" is not a polite or correct way to inform a party that you need to leave. Wanting to write faster does not mean you it's ok to not be polite.
Grats, brb, dps, are examples of how I don't mind shortening of words, or abbreviations. They are meant to reduce the time needed to write a message, and are generally used alone(unless it's an abbreviation of a term).
Writing "lol he is fail" is not correct in any way. It is used purely because some people think it's cool to write in "leet speak". Phail is also an example of how words which are not faster to write is used purely because they're cool.

Having a few lol's and rotflols and zomgs is nothing compared to what it could be. To be completely honest, I was amazed (in a good way) at the grammar used in WoW. Try playing an FPS; people are so frantic just to get their thoughts out there before getting shot that there is ZERO grammar used.
PS: I do use the world "lol" (pronounced lŏl), über (pronounced oo-ber), roflcopter, and "intertubes" (as opposed to "internet") in daily life. Call it nerdy, call it lame, but its my personality. If you have a problem with that, you can keep it to yourself.

I'm not the best here becouse i'm italian. But the example you are showing us it's just shortening a word (removing "control" in this case). About the OP point, let's make an example... "Elite" vs "L33t"... is this the way you think about evolution? Or PHAIL vs Fail it's improving the communication between people? I don't think so..
But as i said, i'm italian, you guys should be able to judge better than i can do.
And sorry for my English
I get where you are comming from on this, but we have to remember that the lanauges that we speak now have not sounding this way forever. "Come hither wench, feth me some muton, less you spend the night in the rack" I know my spelling there was not very good, but I think I get the point across.
I don't understand replacing letters with numbers though, to me l33t is just someone trying to act cool online, and failing.

Same here lol! Me and my friends just find it amusing to bastardize the english language in some ways.
But i agree. To quote someone: If you say "plz" 'cause its shorter than "Please", I'll say "No" 'cause its shorter than "Yes."
It's annoying to see people use this "AOL talk" religiously.

I'm typically not one to defend these type of people but the English language is an ever-evolving creature. The mere fact that it is an amalgamation of several different languages makes it a hotbed for experimentation and in-breeding. For those of you railing against writing or inventing words because they're "cool": would you be as vehemently opposed to writers like e e cummings or the playwright Shakespeare (both took well-documented liberties with the English language)? I'm going to guess that you use that same logic to argue against the entire Modernist movement. Please, get off your high horse.

To the person who says get off your high horse, you are clearly misunderstanding the point of my original post. Those terms flooding your screen especially when used to insult someone or at least make a negative point (i.e., U R teh Phailz lawl pwnt) is just about the most idiotic thing imaginable and immediately tells everyone who the real culprit is in the "fail" department.
Ok? Does it make you feel better to know that they used improper grammar and spelling? And that the mere fact that you can recognize that makes you better?
I really don't know what your aim was when posting this topic. The people who agree with you, don't need to be told that these people are morons. It's immediately obvious.
And yeah, I understood the point of your post. It makes you feel better to lament the falling standards of grammar and diction in a video game. Honestly, if you want something to be truly enraged about, just take a look at what warrants an "A" in an undergraduate course in English these days.

I have nothing against these phrases. I only hate it when people use those phrases out of place. (Which is 99% of the time).
To quote you :
"LOL"s have become the new "Ok" or "Fine".
So I guess my answer is ultimately; yes.
