Do healers normally get assigned?

Hi, something's been bothering me for a while. I used to be a healer, and normally in our guild we wouldn't be assigned to any specific target. So you pretty much run around healing whatever's low, including the spamming of tank.
Now I'm a tank, and ... it sure seems that it's causing wipes.
Yesterday on Mally 10-man, for example after the vortex, I got damaged from falling for 4k. Than I pulled the boss to a side, and got hit for 10k, than another 10k, and than the breath took me out with 7k+overkill. So I took 31k damage (I'm 40k buffed, but maybe wasn't at full in vortex) without getting healed.
Than RL asked if healers assigned themselves to any target, and they said no, but they both had 40% healing on me, and rest on group... does that even matter? I have a feeling that after vortex they both went to group ... is that 40% significant, because I'd expect the important part to be the healing at the right time, not as much as amount healed.
Similar thing happened on Kael ... something, in 25 man. Few people got frozen, I stopped seeing heals on me, and died.
Is it normal to assign specific healers to specific target in the beginning of the raid/boss? or is it normal to kind of wing it?
I sometimes ask 'who's healing me?' in the beginning of raids and wait for someone to answer ... yesterday I haven't ... should I do that? I don't want to annoy healers, I just don't like wiping because someone doesn't know what they should be doing.

i think its normal, that some healer will heal tank at first and other healer will heal group and maybe help tank, so if you got paladin healer, than assign him to heal you as a MT and if he got some spare time then heal group and other healer for example sham will spam chain heal to raid

This is why healing assignments take place. If theer were assigned healers, then you wouldn't have wiped. You should ALWAYS have a dedicated healer to the tank, it's silly not to, as he is taking alot of damage. The other benefit is that is prevents healers from going oom from way too much over healing. If two people heal the same person and one heal gets wasted, that wil cause them to go oom before they should be.

I've rarely been assigned to a specific person in raids to be honest although I do see other class healers occasionally told to stick with the tank, I always assume that the tank is main my main priority and have him on focus, but as a shaman I am most useful for raid healing - so I will do as much raid healing as possible but always have one eye on the tank, if the tank is going down then he is my first priority. If the tank dies the chance of wipe is increased hugely so it is logical that all healers would pay attention to the tank and switch to him when necessary. Even if a healer is told they are on raid healing they shouldn't stop concentrating on the important people, ie. the tanks/off tanks.

The big problem without any assignments is that there are some fights where you can't heal reactively
(ie waiting for the tank to drop to start a hea). There are some where not casting continually on a 100%life tank leads to a swift death.
The other problem is that when someone's life is dropping, you will have 7 healers who will cast a heal at him. Out of those, 6 are very probably wasted, which means they aren't doing anything usefull for that GCD except wasting mana.
Now put those 2 circumstances together and you get stupid wipes because people stopped healing the tank to do something useless. The only reason they wouldn't want assignments in my opinion is :
- they are stupid and don't want to make their life easier/raid smoother
- they live to pad their healing meter with useless heals which is also a sign of stupidity
It is possible to just wing it on heal (as it is to wing it on dps or tanking) when you know the instance well and the priorities of each fight (and overgear the content usually). If this causes wipes it's a sure sign that you aren't there yet.

In my raids, we usually have healers assigned about half of the boss fights.
Heal assignments were absolutely necessary back in the day of 40-man raids, because it was just way too chaotic. Now that raids are much smaller and you have mods that communicate incoming heals on a target, it's not quite as mandatory.

In 10-man raids, we usually don't formally assign healers unless it's a weird fight, like assigning a kiter healer on Gluth or a dedicated Ice Block healer on KT.
We always assign healers in heroic raids though. Usually healers are assigned for each tank and a few are assigned as raid healers if there's AOE damage.
But healers just spamming who's low is a recipe for failure.

Not assigning healers will be a big source of overhealing, people will just end up sniping others heals and mana will be wasted. In most cases this doesn't matter, depends on the encounter and the players. Some people are incapable of figuring out their assignment on their own, and some people will gladly take care of it and discuss it with the other healers (Ex: "I'll heal tank, you go raid?" - "Yup").
Good and/or experienced players can figure this out without the need for verbal assignments, but if you're new it might not always be that clear. Who's in charge of fixing this depends on the structure of your guild/raid. Not all self-proclaimed raid leaders are good raid leaders, and if you're just a happy bunch of loons someone will usually take charge.
Now I'm done stating the obvious. Tyvm.
