Hi, I'm still pretty new to my paladin, i've basically leveled her from 1-Current as RET and i plan to level her to 70 as RET. (Mainly since i have 2 hierlooms)
HOWEVER, my ultimate goal for my paladin is a protection tank, and I was thinking about leveling 70-80 as prot for the following reasons:
a) Easier grouping for instances
b) Learn the spec
c) Begin gathering the correct gear for 80
However, in light of the recent changes to the way paladins work, I am at a complete loss as to how to gear a prot pally.
My plans are to try and pick up some items in BC so when i hit northrend i'll have at least the right configuration of gear to begin playing prot and not suckfail 100%.
I need some advice from the paladin community as im completely lost, below are a list of my concerns:
1. Do prot pallies gear differently for grinding/questing, or does thier damage as prot come from thier tanking abilities, and thus gear that affects thier threat generation (as threat for pallies is a factor of thier holy damage)?
2. What's the deal with spellpower and prot pallies, I was told that prot pallies these days are basically indistinquishable from a warrior now (gearwise), i.e. no spell power required, it's all accumulated through talents that mod thier ap/normal warrior-style tanking stats.
3. Generally what kind of stats SHOULD i be collecting? Obviously mitigation (parry/dodge/block/armor)
And finally:
4. Any tips anyone has for leveling solo as prot (playstyle-wise).
Any help on the subject would be greatly appreciated, most info I can find online is slated towards lvl 80 play and just tanking, it's hard to extrapolate this information to my situation, and i don't wanna just jump knee-deep into it and end up not enjoying myself. My aim is to be prepared, and I hope you've got some tips for a new paladin.

Kind of. When you solo as prot, you'll most likely be AoE grinding, so you'd be using your tanking gear.
Added to this, with 3.1, you get anti-caster bonuses in your tanking rotation, so yes, stick with the tanking gear.

Yep, the only difference being in paladins less dependant on hit and expertise.
And
some
paladins using a spell power weapong for 4+ mobs.
3. Generally what kind of stats SHOULD i be collecting? Obviously mitigation (parry/dodge/block/armor)
Go about it roughly, when leveling, I take, Stam, Defense, Strength, Block.

Instancing is fun and quick with the right people ;)

I was thinking about leveling 70-80 as protI'd recommend you stay Retribution until 75. If you have Rested XP racked up that'll only take you the quest cap achievements in Borean Tundra, Howling Fjord and partially Dragonblight.
Levelling gets much faster and fun when you get Shield of Righteousness.
3. Generally what kind of stats SHOULD i be collecting? Obviously mitigation (parry/dodge/block/armor) Just to clarify, as you seem to be intent on becoming a tank...
Mitigation is Armor, Block Rating and Block Value. It reduces damage you take per hit and overall damage taken.
Parry and Dodge are Avoidance, they allow you to neglect damage completely, are relatively luck-based and also reduce your overall damage taken.
For levelling and initial heroics, Block and Block Value are your two best friends, providing both mitigation and needed TPS. Love them and care for them.

Is it really worth waiting, i was hoping to get more experience and gain the benefit of tanking instances.

I would suggest going prot at lvl 70 and picking up the full Cobalt Tank set. It's a full 8 pieces, all usable at level 70, and those 8 pieces alone should get you close to the defense cap for your level. Tanking instance can be a pain in the ass to learn, but it sure as hell is fun. Learning in easy instances such as UK, Nexus and AN is a much easier and safer route then trying to learn in harder instances such as Gundrak (first boss can be a *!@#$), HoL and HoS. Once you get to around level 74 you will want to start picking up the Tempered Saronite tank pieces. They are great, and most of them will last you to 80. Also, as you start to finish up OL, and in the starting quests in Howling/Borean, pick up the prot quest rewards so you don't end up spending unnecessary gold in the AH. You will thank yourself later.
While Prot, you will want to keep Blessing of Sanctuary on yourself to keep your mana up, use Retribution Aura for reflective damage, keep up Righteous Fury for the mitigation (and insane threat in instance), Seal Vengeance and Judge Wisdom (unless you find yourself running out of mana too frequently, in which case Seal Wisdom), and use Holy Shield every time it comes off CD. Use Divine Plea frequently once you get it, and if you're a Blood Elf, Arcane Torrent. Once you hit level 75, acquaint yourself with the 96969 tanking rotation.
What blademeld said about spell damage weapons is true - we only use them for tanking a very large pull in an instance. The extra SP increases the damage done by Consecration, which aside from Hammer of the Righteous (only affects 3 targets) is our best spell for creating large amounts of threat on multiple targets.
Good luck and have fun =].
Thanks for the info on the gear. I guess I forgot to mention to everyone that I have over a years worth of tanking experience on my Druid. I decided to can the druid for a tank this xpac since I didn't like the changes to feral tanking.
As for the other information, this is extremely useful :) Thankyou :D
