Actually, 20 or 40 are not high levels, it's pretty easy to level up at that stage. And because of that you'll be constantly getting new gear. I (and most people probably will too) strongly suggest not buying anything on the AH (any gear, I mean), the items you'll get as quest rewards will be more than enough, gear is not important at such an early stage in the game. You'll be better off just focusing on leveling rather than worrying about what you're equipping.
Alternatively, you
could
pick a profession such as BS or LW, and while you level it you'll be able to craft a few pieces of gear. Still, not (definitely not) necessary.

If your trying to do well in BGs, that's your problem. Until the level 60+ brackets, and even sometimes in the 60-69 bracket, all your going to find are people with level 80 characters and way too much time and gold who spend thousands of gold making a character for the sole purpose of winning low level battlegrounds. These are called twinks, and trying to compete with them is pointless and should not bother you. Just keep leveling.

Yup, it's true. Two of my alts, at levels 35 and 41, do have a number of blues that are up to 10 levels lower then them and they've not had any trouble yet. No need to worry about gear yet, just get to 80 using drops and quest rewards...it's what they're there for.
If it's
really
stressing you out, try doing a dungeon run or two somewhere around your level. And yes, a crafting profession can be well worth the time and effort you put in - enchanting might be good to give your gear a little boost.

You don't worry about gear until level 70+.
