Herbalism vs. Mining - auction house prices

I was doing some research on AH today, to help a friend (hunter lv.58) who wants to drop leatherworking for a gathering prof (coupled with skinning). He got 5G right now, so he really needs to make some minimum cash to progress. I opted for a 2nd gathering prof, as the topic suggests... but what is actually sells/gathers better between ore and herbs? I will try to explain my ideas, please correct me if needed.
1st
thing was to check "stacks" prices on AH for ore, bars and herbs. Generally speaking, ore stacks sell for
much
higher values, compared to herbs that grant few golds unless you are able to visit Northerend (at least). Low-level ore (even the basic copper) sells good, looking at the market.
2nd
step was considering "how hard is one job vs. another". Well, in that case mining a node or herbing a bush takes the same time, doesn't it? So... same thing.
3rd step
was thinking about the "useful" factor. Herbs should win over ore thanks to alchemy and inscription. Yes, even ore is used by more than one profession but... alchemy and inscription use a massive amount of herbs and generally speaking should grant more buyers.
Last step
was coming on wowhead and beg for some help ;-) as I've never tested herbalism, just mining. My final advice would be "go for mining as ore sells pretty good AND at higher levels you can have Saronite arrows for free".
What do you suggest?

Mining is great. It seems to be the best money maker all the way from early on (Copper Ore) to later (Thorium etc.).
I'm Mining/Skinning myself. If I were to pick again, I might choose something other than skinning, but no way would I choose to drop Mining. Especially with the latest patch, where you only have to strike the vein once to get all the ore it contains.
I have no experience with Herbalism, but can't imagine it being better than mining for making money.
A level 58 with 5g LOL. I'm level 60 with 4K Gold (mostly because of Mining).
Cheers.

A good idea is once you get an epic flyer and cold weather training, pick up both mining + herbalism to make huge amounts of cash just flying around Sholozar Basin or somewhere similiar.
I just hate sharing the radar for 2 professions but yes, that helps a lot. I am now thinking to drop skinning for mining (and keeping Enchanting for DE). Still have to decide damn...
NOTE: I think it's really unfair that druids can go flight-form and herb/mine on the fly. That's a big advantage for them and a slow-down for other clases.

And I think it's unfair that hunters can use Aspect of the Pack while riding on a Vehicle, something they can do even in Vanilla land. They also need to expend mana to go from mounted to battle ready.
We all have advantages and disadvantages. Stop whining about ONE feature.

Agreed.
I'm level 35 with my Shaman and he already has more than 250 in Herb.
When my Paladin was level 60, his Mining was only skilled to 200.
This just shows how Mining is harder to level up than Herb. You encounter more Herbs than Mine nodes when leveling. If you want to level up Mining, you actually HAVE to level it up. Herbalism is a breeze. You don't NEED to run around looking for some. It's everywhere! Plus, they respawn pretty quick, I think.
I leveled up my Mining from 200 to 300 in about 20 hours of looking for nodes. It's a PAIN but it's well worth it. The cash is just amazing. Even a stack of Copper Ore is 20g on my server.
I suggest you go Mining for $.

I agree, anyway that's something we will not see after patch 3.1, as Blizzard already announced. So they're aware of this.
Stop whining about ONE feature.
Mate, we're discussing about professions and gathering mechanics. If you do not like it, just turn 180° and find another topic.
Ore may sell for more in most cases, but in a same span of time, the Herbalist is likely to have possibly double the amount of herbs, because of so many more nodes to gather from. Also, crystallized life/Eternal Life certainly sells for more than Earths and Shadows (assuming as a Miner you are farming Saronite and not Cobalt, in which case you'll get Earths and Waters, and Waters sell for more than Shadows).
Good point, I did not think about nodes availability indeed...

I myself am a Miner, and my friend's girlfriend is an Herbalist. We usually make rounds of Sholazar and the like to find nodes. Perhaps it's that specific zone, but she seems to find an Herb node after flying for 10 sec, while I can go several minutes before finding a vein to mine.
Most likely, there is more miners then herbalists out there.

On a side note, after patch 3.0.8 mining "buff" (one click = you gett all the ore) the time you spend to mine nodes is dramatically reduced... and prices should decrease, I guess.
