Ive always been around the middle of recount. Almost never at the top, nor at the bottom.
Mages, warlocks, hunters, rogues and DK's always rule the top of the metre. Thats what they are brought for. They are the ones you bring to rip some face.
Tanks are around the middle to lower half since they are really only there to generate threat and take punishment. Their dps is a bonus.
The healers of course would rarely be doing any dps at all.
For me, ive always been above the tank a fair bit and just below the pure dps.

Oh I don't know. It depends on the situation, on a fight where you can just sit back and do your rotations perfectly, you can compete with DK's. On trash and fights with multiple targets or lots of moving you might have trouble competing.
Just remember to attempt to use every GCD for the highest benefit spell you have available.
Have you taken a look at shadowpriest.com - Their community is superbly fantastic.
As for the rotation, for shadow priests its actually more of a priority list.
Always attempt to keep up all three of your dots, VT, SWP, and DP. If you have the SWP glyph, you should only have to cast SWP once in the beginning of the fight. In between keeping those up, you should use MB every time the CD is up, if possible. But don't let DP/VT fall off while you wait 1.5 seonnd for the MB CD, and then cast it. You would lose more periodic damage then you would gain from letting MB sit off CD for 4 seconds or so.
I haven't been shadow in a while, but I assume this system still holds true. It's less rotation, and more being systematically aware of whats going on in the fight, and applying your spell priorities appropriately.

Currently shadow priest is actually a bit overpowered (unless fixed in the last day or two) due to a bug that make mind flay do more damage than intended.
(edit: no longer true) Our raid shadow priest is usually top of the meters since 3.0.8. Haven't been shadow for a little while but as said above use a priority system.
The one thing that is somewhat misleading about the above post is you don't want to clip your dots they actually should briefly be off and then be put back up.
Shadow priest DOTs tick every 3 seconds starting 3 seconds after you cast them with the last tick as the spell expires. If VT has 2 seconds left on it cast something else. If you cast VT and it lands with 0.5 seconds left, that means that it hadn't done any damage for 2.5 seconds but would have in 0.5 seconds but since you refreshed it no damage will be applied from the DOT for another 3 seconds meaning 5.5 seconds in total without a tick. SW:P works differently when mind flay renews it with talents so don't worry about it except at the start of the fight and any time it expires (which is rare but happens on some bosses that have a phase where you can't DPS the boss).
Priority is (I believe): VT, MB, DP, MF. I don't know for sure but I believe it is very rarely good to wait on a cooldown always be casting something.
Of course healing gear isn't ideal for dps but some pieces are good. You need hit, you should gem for spell power once hit capped, MP5 adds no DPS and healing trinkets aren't usually great DPS (grab Sundial of the Exiled and Forge ember (or mark of war prisoner if you need the hit) as great DPS trinkets that are easy to get).
Finally, what are your glyphs and talents?
edit: I put MB above DP but I am not 100% sure on that. DP doesn't do a huge amount of damage so I think MB is better to cast if both are up at the same time.
