Unholy Spec

I'm currently specced
17/0/54 Unholy
, and my raid DPS is the highest it's ever been. However, I'm not completely enjoying the spec. I don't want to be a pet class, and I could just skip Ghoul spec but my Ghoul seems to be about 10% of my DPS. What I
do
really enjoy is the Glyphed Scourge Strike. In the tank and spank fights like Patchwerk or Archivaun, I basically only have to cast Icy Touch and Plague Strike once at the beginning of the fight, and then it's SS spam from then on.
Is there a viable Unholy spec that doesn't use the Ghoul? Or is it skipping out on a big part of the specs DPS?

you don't have to use the ghoul at all. for DPS, yeah it's basically an easy boost to DPS for a mere two talent points (counting the prerequisite Shadow of Death). however, if you're not enjoying the spec for whatever reason, then change. try speccing into Summon Gargoyle instead. i believe (and someone feel free to correct me if i'm wrong) that the gargoyle will put out more overall damage on a single target (i.e. boss) than your ghoul will. The only downside for summon gargoyle is the fact that you have to keep pumping RP in to keep him up longer, and the 3 min cooldown is.. well it's not terribly long really, as you would more than likely only keep him up on bosses.
play around with your spec some. if you don't like what you're doing, then change it. the big thing is that YOU enjoy what you're doing with your char.

Ok, I'm switching specs and I just moved the 1 point in Ghoul Master to Gargoyle. However, should I still take Ravenous Dead 3/3? I'd still get the 3% Str, but would the 3% Spell Hit from Virulence be better?

With no ghoul, Ravenous Dead is horrible on a per-point basis on DPS.
It is responsible for .06%/.10%/.16% of your DPS (depending if you have 1/2/3 points in it). That puts it even below Outbreak, which is another low DPS contributor.
Shadow of Death is another that is kinda 'meh' if you don't have the ghoul, but it's better per point than Ravenous dead.
Also consider Unholy Aura if no one else is bringing it to a raid. It doesn't mean anything in soloing, but it can bring a good bit of DPS to your raid if you do 10/25's to increase the Time on Target for people. Unfortunately, it's not something that can be quantified because each fight is different. Like, worthless for Patchwerk, helpful on Maexxna, first phase of Kel'thuzad, helps a LOT on Sartharion for avoiding flame walls, etc.

Thanks. I'm now using
this build
. I switched out Ravenous for Virulence, Shadow of Death for Corpse Explosion, and Master of Ghoul for Summon Gargoyle.

Make sure you test this on a target dummy. I know you don't like having a ghoul, but I think the changes you've made will make you like the build better, but still end up being a net DPS loss. Be okay with that, I guess is what I'm saying.

I think on the dummy, it will be, but I know that at least in boss fights my Ghoul seemed to die less than a minute into the fight any ways. Having a new AoE (Corpse Explosion, which I Glyphed, I swapped out my Ghoul Glyph) and a new single target DPS skill (Gargoyle) will probably end up with higher DPS in the actual fights.

what is your rotation for the Unholy spec?
IT > PS > BS > BS > Spam SS (Glyphed) > Dump RP with DC or Unholy Blight > BS x2 whenever Blood Runes are active > Continue to spam SS until diseases run out > Refresh IT and PS when diseases run out

how do you dump RP? im kinda a noob at the unholy spec ive been blood for so long
Blood has to dump RP also. And Frost. Rune Power does nothing if you don't use it. Dumping RP just refers to using abilities that consume Rune Power.

I use it often enough for the 5% damage boost to be noticeable. =)

Like Afoxi and I said in our previous posts: Death Coil, Unholy Blight, Corpse Explosion, Gargoyle. Whichever best suits the current situation.
