Just tested this, so it should work. If you don't have any need for a focus frame you can do this:
Set the tank as focus by selecting him and typing /focus (or make a macro to make your current target your focus).
Create a macro with the following line: /assist
That should switch to whatever target your tank is currently attacking. Also, if you're using the default Blizzard UI focus frame, it will have a target of target for your tank so you can just click if necessary.
If you need the focus frame for something else, I can't think of another workaround for an untypeable tank name.

I'll make this a second post, since it's another way you can make an assist macro.
Create a macro, this will be a factory for other macros and not the actual assist macro:
/script CreateMacro( "
MACRO_NAME
",
ICON_NUMBER
, "/assist "..UnitName("target"), nil, nil);
Things to replace:
MACRO_NAME
is the name visible on top of the assist macro icon in the UI.
ICON_NUMBER
is the number of the icon you want to use for the assist macro.
Other things to do:
Replace the first 'nil' with '1' if you want the new macro on the Character Macro tab.
Replace the second 'nil' with '1' if you want the new macro to be saved server-side instead of client-side.
Whenever you need to make an assist macro, select the player you want it for, then use this macro; a new macro with "/assist Whatever_His_Name_Is" will be placed in your General tab (you must switch tabs or close/reopen the macro pane in order for the display to refresh).

wtb more tanks that atleast throw up a skull :)
Thankfully I am usually with a small handful of tanks I know and I rarely dps anymore but they will at the very least throw up a skull to show people which target they want done first, past that it doesn't much matter.
When tanking myself I prefer to have a skull and X and don't generally care past that, but I will skull targets midpull normally just to show everyone which one I want focused even if it's not the target I'm smacking on myself (e.g. I was focused on getting solid threat on that caster mob at the pull and had a melee mob that didn't get hit by shield throw so I don't want him eyeing the healer or aoe'ers, thus skull on the caster now that he's good and ticked at me while I go slap that melee upside the head a time or two, maybe call his mom a 'son of a motherless ogre' for added effect)
With me the skull is the one I'm confident I have a good threat lead on and/or is a mob I want out of the picture (ie caster, healer, or cc'ing mobs)

I don't care who throws up the tags- as long as they are there everything works great. I've seen healers throw them up and dps throw them up. The tank... well he's busy holding agro.
