I recently switched from CS to Mutilate a couple of weeks ago, and I personally find that it's easier to keep a solid rotation up than in combat. The hardest part is to teach yourself to
not
mash the Mutilate button the moment you've got 60 energy. =P
Mutilate builds do seem to be a bit more gear dependent than combat though. In a good boss fight, a lot of your energy will come from crit hits, so having a good hit rating (preferably 200 or more) and crit chance (at least 20%) is probably of more value than extra AP.
Have a look at my
armory profile
. I haven't gemmed my leggings yet, since I'm trying to find a JC to cut a pair of
Glinting Monarch Topaz
or
Rigid Autumn's Glow
. The only part of the set that I've dished out money for are the LPC's, but at 250g a piece, they're
well
worth it.
On the training dummies, I'm able to pull about 1500dps over 3 minutes with Instant/Deadly. Don't forget to vanish->garrote whenever it's up.

Hey, I just hit 80 about a week ago and I have a question about DPS. My question is which type of rogue does more DPS, combat or mutilate? At the moment I'm a combat rogue and throwing about 1.2k DPS (just hit 80 btw so be nice about the low DPS :-P). Anyway if any of you have experience with what does more please let me know. Also along with your answer if you could put a list of what moves to use in order that you think pumps out good DPS that would be nice, if not don't worry about it. Thanks for reading.
hit 80 about a week? get 2x LPC with mongoose on both.
change to mutilate (
http://www.wowhead.com/?talent=f0ef0exoVboIzAo0xV0hZxb
);
use that rotation: garrote > slice&dice > mutilate x2 > rupture > mutilate > evenon;
and remember to keep up your hunger for blood with 3 stacks, also you must renew your slice&dice using evenon (don't care about how many cps or poison stacks you have at the time, just use it to renew your SnD) and must keep up your rupture with 5 cp.
it'll increase your dps, no doubt.

i think that to be effective with mutilate, 30% crits is the minimum. Beyond that you will be energy starved and you will have a lot of dificult to complete your rotation.
but, with the cookie cutter spec, you can get 8% crit from talent.

One might conclude from your post that you need 30% crit as some sort of prerequisite for speccing mutilate. That is incorrect, and may lead people to focus on a single stat (crit). Never focus on single stats. Focus on your dps as a whole.
