Tbh, last time i was in VOA25 there was a frost mage that was putting out steady 1700-1800 dps. It is all about having plenty of crit, knowing how to abuse frozen fingers, freeze and shatter.
I was frost mage from 1 to 80 and long into 80ies sice i was going for loremaster achievement. The difference between frost mage and 2 other builds can not be compared when not raiding.
I tried ffb, but it didnt work out for me, i tried arcane, and i didnt like constant drinking. So now i am fire / arcane build, and its working wonders, at least for me. Survivability when doing dailies is not all that good, and mana shield is making me drink all the time. Maybe i am lazy and should use frost nova more, but ive been frost for too long :D If i havent become such a recount h0 :) i would go back to frost in an instant.

tbh, if a mage is pulling out 1.7-1.8k DPS in 25 man arch, he's not doing so hot. i did 25-man arch yesterday with the raiding arcane spec and pulled about 2800 DPS. i have 1700 SP, and i think 28% crit in molten armor, and i didn't run out of mana thru the entire fight.
with proper 25 man raid buffs, if the mage is at least halfway decently geared (heroic gear minimum) he should be pulling AT LEAST 2k DPS. in frostfire or arcane spec, with the gear i mentioned, you WILL be pulling at least 2k.
my first time in naxx i was the raid frostfire spec (before patch 3.0.8) with about 1400 SP and was pulling around 2200-2300 dps on bosses. your crits are unreal. you won't see 10k frostbolt crits without a ridiculous amount of spellpower because they just don't scale as well as frostfire bolt/fireball or arcane barrage after a 3-step arcane blast buff.

Not HOT, but completely acceptable. Although i play in a very casual guild and can run with pretty much any spec i want.

i'll agree with that. i run in a pretty casual guild myself. we've just recently started running 10 man naxx (two weeks ago was our first time) without any pugs. my point simply was that in equivalent gear he could easily pull 2k+ DPS if he was specced arcane and using the simple ABlx3>ABarr or MBAM rotation, if not more.
i understand casual guilds and running with any spec you want, but the more DPS everyone puts out, the easier it is to down bosses. the more bosses you down, the more gear you get, and even in a casual guild, that makes everyone happy. conversely, the longer the fights, the harder it is on the tanks AND the healers. it's rather frustrating not being able to get that last 200-300k off of grobbulus, and not having it necessarily be anyone's fault, but you're JUST not quite putting out enough DPS. (heh.. /end personal segue)
