Ok, I've played a mage for 3 years now. It's what I know, it's what I do best.
My alt I toy with his a warrior, as of now, level 73.
I know to taunt when I see monster's on other targets. The issues I'm having are, one. People's dps is surpassing my threat. Besides Shockwave and Thunderclap, I need advice for building up group threat quicker.
Two, in combat, I'm sorry, I'm not lightening fast, nor can I always see who's attacking what when everyone's in a big pile. I use Xperl, and I can easily see who has aggro, but I dunno the best way to get that mob off them when it's just a huge cluster of hell.

The best bet is to not have the mobs go off you in the first place. Assuming you are talking about instances, my normal routine is to mark a skull target, heroic throw, shield slam when it gets to me, then TC to get the rest stuck to me. Take a step back and shockwave them all. If my revenge is lit up, I'll throw a revenge on skull. Then I'll switch to a secondary target and shield slam it, then switch to the third target and devastate. Throw TC again. Switch back to skull and revenge and shield slam. At this point skull target should be stuck to you enough that you can safely ignore it. DPS should have it dead before it would leave you. Throw another TC, and focus on shield slams, revenges, and devastates on your other targets.
General though it to get a bit of burst threat on skull, TC and Shockwave so the mobs don't run to the healers, throw a bit more threat on the primary, and then use some big threat moves on your seconary targets in case your DPS is AoEing.

Any advice on taunting when you can't seem to pick people out of the big ol' cluster fruck.

Take time to look through the stickied guides for macros, of particular interest is the macro used to charge/intercept/intervene depending on your target. Tab can be a big help, every so often, once threat has built up on the primary, Tab through the other targets and smack em with a Devastate to keep building your threat on them, this is also helpful if you see that a mob has switched targets. If you notice that one has switched, press F and use the above macro to intervene and bring the mob back to you.
