Simple. I've known about the Shadowmeld >> Swift Flight I think since it became an option. It is in fact a GREAT escape tool. As far as it being unfair, I'm going to have to disagree with you. The main reason being that Taurens get their insta-cast Stomp which stuns a target for a full 3 seconds. This gives them plenty of time to finish you off (if you're close to dead), to heal themselves (2 HoT's, or maybe a Healing Touch if they're a noob.
For the longest time now people have talked about how Taurens are the ones that are over-powered. I see Shadowmeld > Flight Form as a balance to that ability. The major drawback to SM > Flight form is that it is only usable in Northrend and Outlands. If you're not in one of those places, you can't use Flight form. Whereas Taurens can Stomp anywhere in the entire game.

Shadowmeld got a 2min CD and can't be cast while running or in any forms.
Warstomp is not instant cast ( well close to it but you can't cast it while running ) and can't be cast in bear or cat form.
About shadowmeld in pvp. Considering the GCD needed to cast it, it's almost impossible to cast it near anyone with some kind of aoe, since he'll probably cast it before the GCD for your opener is up. It's mainly useful to escape after getting some distance and then again, anybody with a ranged AoE will have no problem catching you if you are not out of LoS.
That was for shadowmeld-stealth combo.
About shadowmeld-flight form macro. A good druid will never have issues to escape dangerous situations, if he want to get out, he dont really need shadowmeld.
Shadowmeld is truly a good racial ( maybe the best ) but not overpower at all.

Shadowmeld is very powerful in world PvP, but for arenas I'll take Warstomp -> Cyclone any day of the week.

Regarding world pvp (shadowmeld > flight) its hardly game breaking. Its a running tool. Taurens have it too. Warstomp > cyclone > travel form run until out of combat/cat form dash until out of combat > prowl. Its not as easy as shadowmeld > flight of course but you still have the tools to run.
As for arena, I'd definately rather have an extra stun. Shadowmeld will help you dodge 1 spell. Almost everyone has an aoe and/or a dot, which will drop shadowmeld quickly. Its a gimper version of vanish at best, since you have to deal with the global cooldowns.

@makegoboom : Dont post information if you didnt verify them. War Stomp is 0.5 cast and duration is 2 seconds.
@kaluro: It proc global cooldown, but a 0.5 sec one.

I wouldn't mind having the old Shadowmeld back, actually. The new one is ok, but for a druid that can already prowl, it's not groundbreaking.
I think that the old form of shadowmeld was actually more beneficial to non-druid classes, being able to throw up a stealth at a tower, to go afk, etc. Especially true for my priest, anyway. The new ones still useful, just not as much as the old one. Maybe if the new one had a shorter CD... 1 minute would be great :D QQ :D

I personally love to meld then come out of it with a 1.5 second cast spell (the boomkin pvp set proc can make this freaking scary, 10k to the face = fight changer) as you don't actually begin to be seen till after you have finished the cast itself.
