With the new pve server Borean Tundra being released not long ago I got to thinking about all the times I've rerolled characters in wow, and how much fun the journey to 60 (and to a lesser extent 70 and 80) has been.
Now the Lunar Festival achievements have me running around the old world and it has reminded me just how much I miss it. I can vividly remember something memorable that took place in almost every one of these zones over the many characters I've leveled throughout them.
I have never been great at endgame, I just lose interest so rapidly. I don't like scheduling wow, I have never liked having to put up with finding 40, 25, or even 10 people for long. WOTLK is the longest I have probably played at the max level without rerolling.
But despite that I have never felt the pangs of nostalgia more than I do now. I can remember as far back as the wow stress test and the group I joined to kill razormanes in Durotar. I can remember the dozens of characters I've brought through these zones, and all the people I met on each journey which made each seemingly identical journey through the levels uniquely different. I get to wondering where those people are. The new players I would help out, the experienced ones who would help me. Do they ever think of me? Does anyone from the trio I met as the night elf priest from 2005 ever think back on our memories of getting lost in Maraudon? Or gnome rogue from Christmas 2006 who baked everyone christmas treats. The undead mage who shared multiple mishaps with dirt mounds in Zul'Farak? All the days spent hanging around in the Crossroads, or in the fields of Westfall.
They were all magical times in a game much simpler, much more about adventure and fun than it is now. The game isn't what it used to be, I don't believe I will look back on my days playing WOTLK and think fondly on that one damage meter I scrutinized, or that raid schedule I adhered to like a 2nd job. The game is still fun, don't get me wrong level 60 had the same problems as level 70 and level 80. But levels 1 to 59, I met so many great people and had so much fun. It's not just rose tinted glasses, but memories that I'll likely always cherish

While i never played much during pre bc (i got to level 50-54 or so when the xpack hit) what i noticed about the old world is you could go to any zone and find these little nooks and crannies that had no purpose but were just cool. Zones like burning stepps had these areas, as well as wintersping with an entire cave complex with nothing in it. also for the elders achievement i saw the uldum doors, which was pretty epic.
i still love the game now, but it seems like the zones are just packed and there are no real places no one knows about
