perhaps playing rogue is not something for him, sometimes people grow tired of a class and tries something new. If you gonna pick a range class i suggest you think some about it.
Basically is this:
Mages - depening on specc you can either do fire, arcane or Frost dmg. A mage play style various through the specc but basically you shoot either arcane, frost or fire bolts on the target and have some instant spells. Not so many de dots.
Warlock - Specc afflication, demologist, destruction. Afflication you uses dots and shadow bolts. Have a large variety of dots. alot of spells to time if you wanna stay top on dps. Demologist, more of a pvp specc bcs you cna take alot of dmg on you, you will use your demons alot more than the other specc and bolt and dot the mob(less dots than afflication). Destro you will be doing nuke dmg, there you uses alot of fire spells. requires alot of hits.
Elemental shamans - you light bolt targets, support the grp with totems and give heroism. This class bases it dmg on nature and some arcane.
Balance druid - you will give party 5% crit and can do dps in a mage kind of style. Dps will be focused on arcane and nature. Boomkins are a fun specc with alot of supporting to the raid.
Shadowpriests - a evil version of priests, they will do shadow based dmg and give the raid some mana and health back. Not the same quantity as in before tbc bcs they was nerfed some in that aspect. they can do great dmg and is closest to afflication warlocks in game style.
Hunters - the melee type of range. there is three specc, Marksmanship, beast master and survivalbility. Marksmanship is the specc there your arrows shoots does most dmg instead of pet. Beast you will use your pet dmg aswell as arrows to do a good dps. Survibility is more of a pvp specc so far i understand and should not be used to raid with(i may be wrong bcs my knowledge in hunters are not the best). Hunters is for people who like to do hard dmg and likes pets(welsh favourites).
I recommend you test all classes in game some and ask others in your guild that they think about this.

If you're low on the damage meter I doubt its because of the class, its probably you.
Don't blame bad playing on the class.
