It all depends on your level of social interaction with your guildmates. If you log in a couple of times a week and doing a heroic is about all the time you can muster for dedicated play time, then you likely never have a chance to do any but ask for MORE DOTS MORE DOTS!
If you spend a few hours a night conversing with guildmates in a raid, then information creeps in from everyone about their home life and their own personal world. A simple, "I have to leave raid now, my mom or girlfriend or boyfriend is saying I need to get off the computer" .. while not intended to be a declaration of the player's home life, ends up conveying a LOT of information about it.
/agree
That sum up most rants on this thread (mine included lol)

Yes. There is a gay couple in my guild that likes to chill in vent. Everyone has to watch what they say, or else it gets akward fast.
Congratulations, you're in a guild of 12-year olds!

I remember when WOTLK came out the people in my guild were very excited so they were talking more than they normally would in guild chat. Anyway the subjuct of sexuality came up and i responded with something like "i don't have a problem with gays" and about 1/2 the people online whispered me if i was gay and a few asked in general chat. Am i the only one surprised by this response, since when did i don't mind gays mean i am gay?
Some times gay people feel the need to "test the water" befer talking about there husband/bf or any thing gay related. "i don't have a problem with gays" looks close to some one "testing the water"
and people may have picked up on that.
Were they trying to say "its is oK to be gay" or "OMG he is GAY! WTF"

It was closer to the second one, The problem with typing conversations is the meaning behind what you say is often lost due to no body language or emphasis on words.
And if you were gay, this is where you would start to help people get over the shock of the unexpected and unknown. After that, if they still had a problem or harassed you it would be a GM Complaint. but you are strait so it dose not matter.

IMO one of the best things about WoW is that it doesn't matter one bit who you are. You're only judged on your ability to play the game and your ability to be civil to people.
If you're bullied at school, but you're good at what you choose to do on WoW, it's a place where you can be away from it all, where you're not judged on your looks, your appearance, your skin colour, or your nationality. Sure, people are still racist, but it's either in the spirit of the game (i.e. go die, green skinned orc ****), for which you can incinerate/behead the perpetrator, or it's proper full blown racism, and they're a GM report/ignore away from never bothering you again in your life, guaranteed. The same applies to homophobia, although there aren't any explicitly gay characters in WoW, and thus it tends to be the real stuff.
Sure, you shouldn't hide from your problems, but a major point of an RPG is escapism. Just my $0.02.
More on topic: I'm a bi guy. Do we count? :P
