I'm a 70 BM Hunter with the same bird from the when I tamed the first beast. He screeches all the time or at least since I tamed so very long ago. I can't say it every bothered me but I was blessed with an ability to ignore things. In this case, particularly anything that is minutely subordinate to the game play.
Seriously though, the only issue I've every had is Wow chat not being loud enough. You can change the volume of "sound", "ambeince" and "music" from the Sound tab on the ESC menu screen. I have yet to find a way to modify specific sounds triggered by gameplay.
Also, it could be that you have the "Growl" function turned on. See fourth button from the left when your pet is present. If it is on, the pet will "growl" at the target in an attempt to drawn aggro. With tanks and others, the target might focus on the pet and not on the tank (where it is needed). I typically run with "Growl" turned off.
Besides, you can always tell them, "It better than listening to the goofy dwarf laugh!"

Perhaps its related to your sound card or sound equipment. Some of the advance (read expensive) sound card software comes with a graphic equalizer. Is it possible that the equalizer settings happen to amplify the frequency of the bird screech? When I run Wow with headphones, I notice that it has a lot of base.
