I love tanking and I want to pvp with prot, but alot of people tell me prot warriors just plain SUCK at pvp.
Why is it?
...because in the past, warriors have always required incredibly high value tanking gear to PVP properly. Even then, a lack of talents or abilities similar to Mortal Strike, etc. have left the build insufficient for serious PVP combat. In addition, majority of our abilities were based on generating high threat & as such were lower damage to compensate.
All that changed in 3.0 when warrior threat was shifted from creating threat to dealing damage. This change will take some time to become mainstream, but the conception can & will change. It just takes time, and understanding.

The only reason for this misconception is due to warrior's being coined the "mortal strikers" in arenas for their
healing debuff
and burst damage.

Prot PvP is completely viable, for instance
http://www.wowarmory.com/character-sheet.xml?r=Deathwing&n=Zorfurion
If my 2's partner was geared like me I think we could break 1700 but he is just fully tank geared and spec'ed I'm actually geared and speced specifically for Prot PvP.
2 Prot Warrior's geared like I am totally throws whatever game plan the other team has right out the window. If I had Brutal gear instead of welfare epics (I've always been prot) it would be rediculous but as it stands I can dish out about 7-9k of dmg before anyone does anything to me
Charge > Shockwave > Devestate > Blood Rage > Conc Blow > Shield Bash > Autoblocker/Shield Slam > Stance Dance - Zerker Stance - > Charge Execute
Granted thats the perfect scenario but still. Anything other than full brutal Mages/Druids is Good Game and yes that includes Retnubs.
Prot PvP might not have insane Burst Dmg but with the right gear you can burst (shield slam). But any melee classes is GG and casters too are GG if you time Spell Reflect right. It's probably the hardest class to play in the game.

PVPers dont like seeing prot warriors in BG's. Its another playing style for their lazy, welfare grabbing asses to learn how to play against.
Therefore they will tell you that prot pvp sucks.
I got berrated by 2 people i play with regularly because i started prot pvping. they said i had no right to be good at pvp and that i should stay out of them xD
You should suggest to your playmates that one may play however they damn well please.

What sort of PvP are you talking about?
1. World PvP - Prot's not bad. You're going to stay alive long enough to get help in most cases. Your damage output is decent. You can stun and fear.
2. Battleground PvP - Again, Prot's not bad, for all the reasons above. Plus, in large BG's, the AOE damage is nice. Your ability to stay alive while running a flag is nice. Your ability to guard a flag is nice. And in AV, you need tanks on the boss NPCs.
3. Arena - ok, here you probably suck. Any good arena team is going to nuke your dps/healer partner(s) in a hurry so they can take their time with you. Really, all you are is a distraction, so unless you're on a good team and you excel at making things difficult for the other team (spell interrupts, stuns, bleed effects, etc), you're probably going to be dead weight. Your burst DPS just isn't there, and since you're not healing, you're really not helping those who can heal or do the damage.

That is all very true for a Prot Warrior geared for tanking. However if you gear like I am with a mix and match of DPS/SBV gear substituting STR for STA you tear things up.
1. You can not be a good Prot PvP Warrior with nothing but dmg gear on.
2. You can not be a good Prot PvP Warrior with nothing but tanking gear on.
3. To be a viable option you absolutely must regem some SBV gear, wear dps gear, and wear a slow MH.
The only Defense gear you should be wearing is anything that has SBV on it and has gem slots availible. You have to keep your crit over 25-30% while in Defensive stance, you should aim for at least 800SBV, and hopefully have at least 1800 or more AP.
It's a solid mix between everything. I leave people (unless they are in Full S4) in shock after I burst them down. I sat on the Isle inbetween the town and coast sat down and /afk'ed while waiting to get ganked.
I killed (at the same time mind you) a lock, rogue and warrior. They were in S2 at the least. They ran past stopped and the lock began casting. I immediate charged, popped trinket sheid slammed, shield based hit him like twice and shield slammed him again and he dropped. The rogue was then on me I /lol'ed him disarmed the warrior killed the Rogue and then sundered the warrior up he bladestormed I /lol'ed popped shield wall at him as I gained rage after he was done I shield slammed Conc blowed, shockwaved switched to Zerker popped blood rage Excute and it was GG.
The only problem with Prot PvP is when you get a healer and dps'er. Then your going to die unless somehow you can kill the healer before the dps gets you. We dont have MS so its a gamble.

Shiled Block Value, it modifies your shield slam damage point for point. STR is 2 to 1 for SBV so stacking STR up's SBV and AP
1 STR = 0.5 SBV and 2 AP
