I started with a blood elf with fiery red hair because it looked like me...
I can't say the same for the undead I created after, but I generally model all my characters with the randomize button until something aesthetically pleases me. I'm happy they put in the barbershops, I was getting sick of the hair.

the obvious question to this question is
what does this theory have to say about male players playing female toons?
and vica versa - female players playing male toons?
lol
It's been asked though, and there's no real answer to it because, for most people, it's something simple, like aesthetics.
I have 8 70's, a 49 and a 65. 6 of those 10 are female. I feel female undead are far more evil and vicious looking than UD men (who just look hilarious). My Belf paladin is female, but I would change her to a guy if I could (which is why my DK will be a Belf male). I liked the female look, but their animations are too delicate and their weapon sizes are comically small. Have you seen a female belf use a polearm? It looks like they're just trying to bonk someone on the head instead of kill someone.

I can see what you're going for, but the examples don't wash well.
Maybe if you were a healer in game.. and in real life were a carebear always offering the shoulder to cry on.. or a tank in game.. and IRL always offering yourself as the punching bag/butt of the joke or taking the heat so your friends didn't have to.
What if you heal but are really cruel and cynical? :o
