Easy to get shield for level 70?
Return to board index
Post by

I haven't been on my main in a while, and am using a trashy
http://www.wowhead.com/?item=31490
. Wanted to ask whats an easy to get shield upgrade that won't drive me nuts to get? I've done a search on shields, but most of them are either from a lot of PvPing, Arenas, have huge Rep requirements, or costs a ton of badges.
There anything (purple wise) that I can run an instance once or twice for or via a quest reward? I'm talking easy here.
Thanks.

I started working towards my
Dawnforged Defender
soon as I hit 70, but I see you're not interested in massive rep grinds. (I was willing to do it because of
Guardian's Alchemist Stone
and
Shattered Sun Pendant of Resolve
, but with Wrath so close I'd say it's still not worth it)
There aren't too many great options from drops or quests.
Platinum Shield of the Valorous
from the first boss in regular Shadow Labyrinth, or
Aegis of the Sunbird
from the second boss in regular Botanica are probably your 2 best bets. But neither of them is a big improvement from what you have now.
I probably ran SL and Bot collectively 15 times on my warrior and never saw either of those. (Add in another 6 or so for my Shaman, but he's not the one I needed it for)

The only shield comparable to the
Merciless Gladiator's Shield Wall
from raiding isn't until Gruul, and even then you do not get a true upgrade until you hit Tier 5 content.
PvPing for the shield is your best bet.
As a fresh 70 tank myself, I'm just wondering if it is worth it to grind out the shield when Lich King is 2.5 weeks away. That call is ultimately up to you.

You can't tank in LK withouit a good shield, i suggest getting the Merciless shield mentioned. It's easy to get and very good.
On the road from 1-60, you were able to tank instances with just what gear you found and whatever DPS spec you had. On the road from 60-70, you were able to tank instances with just what gear you found and whatever DPS spec you had.
For some reason, I greatly doubt that you're going to need to worry about getting gear before you start your road to 80. I'm certain that a quest blue from TBC will do just fine until you get a quest blue from Wrath.
It's once you hit 80 and plan to start raiding and doing those heroic instances that you need to worry about how good your gear is.

Krisss, welcome to the world of casualcraft.
OP, the rep is your friend. either do a lot of dailies on the island and get a purple shield, or do a lot of tempest keeps runs (mech/bot/arc) and get epic shield from rep.
I recommend running a lot of heroic mech to get an epic sword - it's a drop off last boss. So you'll get both sword and shield.
But the grind on island for rep is much quicker if you don't care about instancing.
Also, if you have some friends, you may be able to get into a chess event in kara for kings defender (very nice epic sword). chess event does not require gear to do, any one who can enter kara (I presure level 1 can't, but I know level 68 can) is as valuable on that boss as anyone t6 geared.

Thanks for the response folks, I guess I should've been more clear. As I mentioned, I have that shield I linked in the OP. I was looking for an easy to get shield upgrade so that I can try out Prot PvP. This wouldn't be for tanking but trying out PvP as a Prot warrior. My current gear is from BGs and Arenas that I ran way back in the day. So I've got mostly Season X and BG Honor gear, along with a 2 hander. Never thought to spend honor and tokens to pickup a shield.
I was thinking along the lines of running a specific heroic for a shield upgrade, but I guess that's not an option. That and I'm not currently raiding with this char.
There's a few things to keep in mind:
1) Honor and Tokens would prob be better saved for level 80 then to "waste" it on gear now.
2) Don't feel like grinding rep for long periods of time.
3) I feel that you don't 'need' anything for WotLK, I'm sure one of the green quest rewards will be better than most epic shields available now.
And sure I agree that epics should be 'earned'. For those folks that spent hours and hours raiding or BGing, you prob earned your epics. But nowadays why waste the time when a lot of them are easy to get.

Krisss, welcome to the world of casualcraft.
Welcome to the World of Only-People-Who-Spend-40hrs-per-weekCraft? Casual has nothing to do with "easy." OP wants a fantastic shield with little investment to get it. This doesn't involve his play habits, but rather his initiative to go further.
The only epic shield you're going to find "easy" to get is the Season 2 PVP shield.

When the OP says that he wants to run an instance "once or twice" it makes me worried about his commitment though.
Sheesh, why does everyone get so bent out about epics having to be earned? Do you really have to "commit" to this game to get gear? I was simply asking if there was an easy to aquire upgrade from what I have now. As I said, it's strictly to try out Prot PvP. If there is anything easy to get through a couple of runs, I'd be interested. From what I've read, the best bet is the BG Honor reward shield.
I find it puzzling that hardcore raiders who sunk tons of time into this game get all worked up when they make gear easier to attain for the "casual" player. I mean come on, do you really need to feel that superior to casual players directly based on the hours you've sunk into this game? I think folks that are this threatened or worked up should take a break from WoW and step outside from time to time.

i'm just saying that the "something for nothing/very little" is the wrong way for going about getting any upgrades.
I do agree with you about getting it for free, that's not my point at all. I'm saying that if there are 3 paths laid out for you to get the same item, generally people tend to pick the easiest path.
Say you can get 3 comparible shields 3 different ways:
1) First way is to raid twice for 4 hours (8 hours total) each to get the shield
2) Second way is to run BGs for 7 hours total to buy the shield
3) Third way is to grind rep for 6 hours and to buy the shield
See, I would pick number 3 because it takes the least amount of time and I don't have to depend on the randomness of drops or win/loss outcomes. I'd be assured to get something, but clearly its not getting it for free.
Well imagine if there was a 4th option that I didn't know about. Say you can get an equal shield by just running an instance for 20 mins. Clearly that's what I would try for in the end.
mkg859's idea is along the lines of the 4th option, one that is thinking outside the box and not what everyone else has said. So thanks for the good idea.
