Me netheir. Im mean, its great for warrior who spent about 50G a week to tank in raids, and daily/farm after..
It's also great for me, as a Paladin, who respecs between Prot and Holy on a regular basis. Or for my roommate, who is primarily a Resto Druid but likes to solo as Feral. Or for another roommate who plays a Hunter, who likes to PvP but hates paying to respec back to a PvE spec for raiding and so skips PvP entirely.
me: druid LFG
dude: u heal?
me: no, im tank
dude: well, u can respec, it's free now
me: no, im a TANK, or a dps
dude: lol nub
First, this isn't a respec. From the notes that I've read, when it becomes available it won't be a respec - you will choose two permanent specs and will be able to swap between them. If you want to do anything outside those specs you still have to pay.
Second, your conversation above
already happens
. If a group's looking for a healer and you're a tank, then you're already not invited because you aren't what they need anyway. They could ask you to respec - and the only difference here is that now you could potentially do it for free. You're the one choosing never to heal - and that isn't their problem.
I mean, as hybrid class, we choose a path, the playstyle can be totaly different from one to other.. 2 sec is perfect for raid, in guild.. But not for the usual content, as 5 man... Pure dps will think that all others should heal or tank..
Alternatively, there are those of us who actually play around with all the roles available to us. Just because you chose a hybrid class and dislike playing around with the other potential roles doesn't make that gospel for everyone.
As for "pure DPS" - there ain't no such critter in WotLK, at least not in regards to classes that do more DPS because that's their sole role. With the possible exception of Feral kitties (sorry kittes :( ), the DPS trees for other classes are competitive against the pure DPS classes.
Besides that, I still put forth that this will not change things that drastically because right now the mindset of those idiots you described in your conversation above is already, "If you
can
heal or tank, you
should
." This mechanic doesn't alter that in the slightest.
It just means that it's cheaper for those of us who are willing to gather the gear and play any role available to do so.
And it's still useful to the non-hybrid classes. Mages who are Frost can swap to a Fire spec for fights where there are water elementals, or to Arcane for Improved Counterspell; Rogues who enjoy PvP can swap to a raiding spec for the weekly guild run at no cost; Holy Priests can flip to a Shadow spec for solo grinding.

at first i was worried that this would lower feral druid tanks in raids since now with this we wouldn't hold the tank and dps in one slot anymore... but i realized this will effectively let ferals who spend their feral talent tree wisely have 3 specs in 2.... feral tank/melee dps and resto or balance as off...
so i could effectively tank dps and heal all in one instance with this ^_^

long cooldown?

what i read was that you could do it mid raids.. (not combat but during a raid) which i presume means they wouldn't put a cooldown on it... it would be like swapping your gear set... just swapping between your two talent spec choices...
hmmm idea for outfitter to change your spec with your gear when you swap to the set that your use for that spec. >.>

I dont so much see it as a bad thing, but i do see the downside
Not only will hybrids get tells from half the dang countryside like they already do, they will be expected to do it all, all the time. It wont matter if you have a well geared hybrid class healer, ppl will be ridiculing them for not having a tankset and being prepared to swap to it at a moments notice
they always have the ability to say no thanks i dont want to and if thats not enough put the whisperer on ignore for a while.

I'm liking this a lot as a Healadin because many times in an instance or even a raid a healer isn't needed and I'd have to respec to join in as DPS. Now I can just switch over. I'm already gathering some Retri gear in anticipation of this change. I have no desire to tank so I won't be doing that, no matter how easy it is.
Likewise I have a friend who likes to quest as Retri but also tanks when needed. Now he can do both. It'll also make it easier to find tanks and healers, who seem to be in short supply.
Unfortunately for me it will also cut down on the demand for healers. Oh well.
As for my Hunter and Warlock, I look forward to experimenting with an alternate spec for raiding and questing and/or PVP. It'll be fun.

I kind of like this myself as a Warrior. I'm an arms warrior and am sick and tired of people commanding me to respec and tank for them. Especially when they just "LoL" when I ask them to front some money for a respec. If
you
beg me to tank, you can help pay for it.
Now it's not a problem. If I need an instance or am in the mood, I'll get my dusty tank gear out of the bank. I just hope people have a little class about it and ask nicely. I'm much more likely to switch to tank for a group that asks "Would you mind respeccing and tanking for us?" than some idiot who says things like "LOL it's free nub, just tank for us."

Well, would blizz come out with a more overall armor set for each class thats talent specs differ enough?
come to think of it, would there even be any point in "unlearning" talents now? you'd think they'd mention some sort of cost to this sort of thing, like a quest or something.
THAT and classes that just dps, such as rogues, mages, warlocks, and hunters are probably gonna have to be buffed in order to get accepted into any raids.
because Druid>rogue

For the high volume DPS classes, we do enjoy the luxury of having to worry about one thing and one thing only.
Damage.
I love being a warlock, but I understand that there are many other warlocks out there, as well as hybrids that can take my place. The solution? Put some hours in, gear up, learn your class, and be the best damn lock/hunter/rogue/mage you can be. That's how you get picked for the 1-2 slots that are open for your class.
