Hunters are the most popular class in WoW.
If you PvP, there's a lot of skills they have that might seem annoying.
Every time I farm primals, there's a guaranteed chance of having 1-3
night elf
hunters fighting over mobs with me.

A good hunter is an excellent DPS with incredibles CC and others "gadgets" ( Like Misdirection ), it's a valuable member for raids and heroics.
It's also a very powerful class in PvP.
But, like Dhazy said, hunter is probably one of the most popular class of WoW. Usually picked up by teenagers ( based on observation ) because they like cute pets and lets face it, Night elfs hunters with names like "Legolass" seems to be quite popular.
The hunter class is a very powerful class, in PvP and in PvE but his image has been tarnished by the population who picked it.
P.S: These opinions are based on observation only, sorry If I offend someone.

When I first started playing and totally new to mmorpg, I picked a pally and grinded to lvl 30 and lost all motivation. I then switched to a hunter and hit 70 with only the VC, Stockades and 1-2 outland runs. Send in the pet, autoshot and mend when needed. I had no clue about grouping because I could never find one that didnt already have a lock, mage or other hunter. Until recently reading these forums I had no idea about chain trapping, gear stats or talent trees. Hunters are easy for casual players who focus on questing without the need to really learn the class. I now do a lot of BGs and it seems that a well played hunter can be devistating amongst the chaos.

As many have said before: Hunters are the most popular class, and therefore have more retards playing them, but the people who hate hunters are usually:
A) People who get there asses kicked by them
B) People who quest/instance with %^&*ty ones.
Hunters are great for their ability to DPS in raids, pvp and are probably the best grinding class in the game (easiest to get to 70), due to their 24/7 tank. However, you can be the best class in the world, but if you dont know how to play it, its potential is wasted.

Many people pick hunters as their first class, as they seem like a fun and easy class to be, and they're somehow attractive to beginners. Warriors and mages are probably somewhat the same, but I think they're difficult enough that noobie players probably give up on them. Many hunters lvl fighting more than one mob at a time, and having an easy time with quests more difficult for other classes. They begin to think that they are amazing or invincible, then they get in groups and decide they should pull, lead, get first pick on any loot, and that they probably know the dungeon better than the rest of their group. This is where the stigma comes in.
I have to admit here that my first couple of characters (on trials) were nelf hunters, and I"m sorry for anyone who had to group with me. ;-(
