Well, this is what I want to know:
Can Pallies DPS? (in a serious, raid environment).
Is Retribution as viable as Enhacement/Balance/Elemental/Feral Kitty in terms of DPS/Utility? or it's just an "oh, crap; there's nobody else to invite :(" spec?

The Retlol Sticky says yes!
Most of us will agree, and you're asking in a biased forum :P

Mmm... then I should ask in a Rogue forum? or maybe the pve general...
I've read the Retlol guide, but it's doen't compare the pally with other classes. Many people would take any other dps class before a Ret pally to the raid, even if that character is pvp specced and geared, just because of the mantra "A lvl 1 critter does more dps than a Ret pally in full tier 6".

Retribution paladin can do competitive DPS as a support class.
That means they don't do as much damage as a hunter or a rogue, but we can keep up with a Spriest or Enhance shammy.
As a matter of fact, in my guild, one of our top DPS is a retribution paladin, albeit, he's one of our top geared members...

but dont forget that crusader strike refreshes all judgements on a target! useful for boss fights so the other healadins judgements wont fade... this means that a boss could be judged with crusader, light, and wisdom at the same time xD

Only until WotLK.* In the current beta patches the "Judgment refresh" mechanic has been removed from Crusader Strike because of the changes in Judgments (all Seals last for minutes and aren't used up by Judgment) and because the range on Judgment can be increased up to 40 yards through Talents.
*Come to think of it, I would almost guarantee that these mechanics changes will come before WotLK, in the pre-patch.

Highest ret dps (brutallus) on wow web stats is 2427dps. 2nd place in raid.

Of course they can DPS, they don't bring nearly enough viable utility to make up for bad DPS. Which is why they aren't valued so highly.
