Huge Scorch crits 1400 and I have only 771 Spell dmg.. I can kill ppl without my AP, POM+Pyro, but that's an awesome utility to have.
Try it out, I love it.

in PvE a mage will get one or two shotted by almost anything. spellcasters will hit for good 4-5k per firballs and whatnot and mages dont usually have 10k+ hp. melee tend to hit for over 10k per hit on cloth. so no, dont even bother with anything that increases armor in PvE, your best chance is just learning to not pull aggro in the first place. having about 8k hp unbuffed is all thats needed.
if you're looking to top charts as arcane, use this spec

key points are stack int, and make use of your high burst damage to average out to high overall dps.
meaning, if you want to do 1200 dps in a 10 minute fight, you would be doing 700 dps for a minute, then 2000+ dps the next minute, then 700 dps again for 3 minutes, then 2000+ dps again, etc. etc.
arcane mages are the absolute best class to taking something down big, fast.
