It's completely dependent on your server's economy. You need to see how much greens sell for and how much the resulting DE mats sell for. That's where the Enchanting money comes... DE mats. People who make money actually doing enchants have gotten all the GOOD ones. You, at 290 won't have those.
Alchemy is an okay profession, and it is always profitable, depending on how much time you put into it.
Example:
I have a Transmute Specialist and an Elixir Specialist.
Transmute specialists used to use Primal Might to be profitable, but now that the individual mats to make the might cost more than what it sells for, I just transmute a Primal Mana into a Primal Fire every day (mana sells at 16-18g, fire sells at 30-35g). That's at least 15g per day profit, more if it procs more than 1 primal fire.
The elixir specialist makes a stack of Greater Agility, Draenic Wisdom, Adept's, and Healing Power. Out of those 20, I'll usually get about 5-6 extra per elixir (which gives me a profit of about 20g per stack of each). That's the margin, because the mats sell pretty much for the same price as the elixir. No profit in making elixirs from AH mats if you're not specialized. Then it takes me about 3 days to sell the 20 of each.
Again, all of that above is strictly based on your server's economy, and could be better or worse.
For where you are now, yes, alchemy would be better, but I would just do Alchemy on another toon and get this guy's enchanting leveled up. Being able to put your enchants on scrolls and sell the scrolls will be really nice in LK, which also means you can enchant all your alts' stuff without them having to pay another enchanter. Troll the AH on a daily basis, make sure you have Auctioneer and Enchantrix addons, it's good at telling you which items are worth disenchanting.
