If you're pulling agro in the first seconds of the fights, then you can help the tank a bit : if his health isn't going down to fast, you can wait a bit for the tank to establish more aggro before healing. You'll generate the same agro you would have when healing continually, and he had some more time to generate more threat.
If you wait too much it might become to much for you to handle it (especially if some others take damage too), so it's a fine line to walk.
If it's in the middle of the fight, then there's nothing you can do.

As an anecdote on a related note (lol @ rhyme), I was tanking a heroic Slave Pens last night with a feral druid in healing gear doing the healing. I found that I was totally unused to someone actually using big heals and having no subtlety talent. I had to work a lot harder to establish multi-mob threat as (amusingly) we had absolutely no CC either. The guy was a real champ with the healing, though, and despite a couple of hairy moments, we pulled it off with no wipes. The group was Druid, Druid, Shaman, Shaman, Warlock. Luckily (?) for me, the Warlock was a total space cadet and did an average of ~300 DPS for the whole run.
I can imagine that without pretty good gear, it would be very hard for a tank to hold aggro in a situation like that, but it was a fun exercise, for sure. Definitely changed up my tanking experience significantly.
