See now on my realm, a small number of people pick themselves silently for defence (usually 2 per base) . A nice organsied group then slowly move from base to base securing, and leaving defence where appropriate. And then 4 eejits go to stables at the start and just fight there the whole game.

Remember that different battlegroups have different trends.
in my experience, the best strategy isn't a zerg (the one large group) nor is it having 5 people defending a node.
3 people defending each node, everyone who remains in one large group to attack. If your team controls farm/stables, bs, lm, gm, then you can leave one at farm/stables to add the other two to the attack group (as long as you have people at lm/gm/bs willing to call incs towards farm)
I love AB. I hate the huge numbers of players who try to get everone to "hold 3". It ALWAYS loses to hold 3.
