There is a good reason that
most
hunters prefer to have cats over other pets. They give out good dps, are pretty easy to maintain (as they eat both meat and fish) and can learn dash (and prowl if you so desire) as well as being one of the few pets that can learn bite
and
claw for awesome dps. This makes them good all round pets that can be used in both PvE and PvP.
It is not unusual to see birds or bats in PvP due to their silence ability that seriously harms casters chances of surviving a fight. After all, what good is a caster who can't cast? Birds/bats can also learn claw which is a good focus dump ability that produces nice dps too.
More recently ravagers and raptors have become popular. Raptors are (on the whole) not dissimilar to cats in abilities (minus the prowl) so can do pretty solid dps in most situations and they can also learn dash so they get to where you want them pretty quickly.
Ravagers are handy as they have dash and gore. Unlike boars who have charge, ravagers can run in without generating agro (good for instance dps) as well as gore and its chance to do 50%(?) extra damage.
You should probably check out pettopia for the full list of different pets, and choose what suits your needs. Cats and Ravagers are very popular on my server/battlegroup at the moment though.
