the effects on the BS sword and mace can't be bought
the stun on the mace makes it near godly

personally i would prefer the stun since it boosts JoC damage, however, there are ret paladins who prefer the 100 strength and 5% fear resistance on the swords

Also may depend of if you are Ally or Horde. I'm alliance and I went Stunherald for the fact that Seal of Command works with slower weapons better. However BE pallys may benefit more from the Lionheart blade because its faster, 3.60 on the blade 3.80 on the mace.

yes, SoB DPS is only damage dependent, however, I often hear that SoComm is better for PvP than SoB due to self damage

Which weapon specialty you choose depends upon what you do more.
I went with the
sword
rather than the
hammer
for my ret weapon. Looking at the stats, the sword gives you more AP, more crit, and of course, the Lionheart proc, which procs a lot more than I expected it to. My paladin is Alliance, and I felt the stats would be better for what I do, mainly heroics and some raiding. While I know that the hammer has more top-end damage and greater likelihood of a SoC proc, the stats on the sword were still more appealing.
For PvP, the hammer is by far the better choice. You trade off a little bit of AP and crit, but in return you get a massive 61 stamina on the stunherald, and of course, the stun proc, which is clearly intended for PvP use.
Both weapons are missing a key stat; hit rating on the Lionheart and Resilience on the hammer. However, assuming that your smithing skill is maxed when you hit 70 and you have saved up the materials, both weapons do quite well to fill that wide weapon gap between what's available when you turn 70, and what you can get with honor points or from heroics/raids/rep.
(Funny off-topic sidenote: the verification code for this post was "ddcup.")
