Unless the person you are linking is either yourself or standing right ontop of you, the chances of you being effected by this spell is very small.
But, to the "it means more healing" argument; This links (up to) 3 people, making them share damage. Our (Shaman, that is; This is a shaman spell) main heal is chain heal, which effects (up to) 3 people. Most shammies use Chain Heal more than Healing Wave (and Lesser Healing Wave is more of an 'osh-' button).
Now, with this in mind, which is more efficient and which one means 'more healing to do and more mana':
Using Chain Heal on one target and having it heal random other people who might take stray damage.
Using Chain Heal on one target and having to use it less because it's also healing the people that target is sharing damage with?

It doesn't increase the overall healing needed, it just distributes it on more targets. That's better for AOE heals and HOTs. The only negative thing about it is that it breaks so easily (30% of total health breaks it, which means it can't be used to make an unhealable MT healable by spreading the damage).

BTW, if you have a squishy healer, who would have otherwise been one-shotted by the stray npc, you now have a healer that lived cuz the damage he took was cut in thirds and split with two others. Easily healed and no one died, useful. There's more than one way to use a spell.

What you are missing is the chance to reduce timed attacks from a raid boss. Such as the Lynx boss in ZA where you need 2 tanks to spread damage. There may be bosses that have an attack that doesn't spread naturally so you may have to Spirit link a tank so he doesn't take full damage and most likely get 2 shot.
Notice there is no cooldown on this spell? Its meant to be used at anytime during a fight. To prevent high burst.
Anything that hits hard enough to 2-shot will break the link. I don't know how that would work then, if it would still split damage from the attack that breaks it. If not, it would be no use at all. If it does, it would still require a lot of effort to recast it.

For PvP spirit link is the holy grail of the abilities. It trivializes mortal strike, neuters burst damage, and immunes you to breakable CC. With the way
ancestral awakening
and
this glyph
work, you shouldn't have much trouble solo healing 5s in WOTLK.
For raids, depending on how spirit link and abilities like shield wall interact, you could keep your tank alive during a berserk by spamming spirit link, so that instead of the tank being gibbed, you would transfer the damage over the link and break it, and reapply the link again.

imagine in your group u have warrior as tank moonkin dps and lets say fury warrior dps
all of them have 10k + hp u can link them together so they all receive a little amount of damage instead of warrior dying if shaman slacked at healing some how .. thats all and it is very useful in raid to share damage between " 3 tanks! " :D means no one will die thats how you should think
and btw ... IMO this is like the best PVP spell you will ever have ... get a lock with soul link 65% reduced damage :s meh i dare you to die and when u crit ur spirit aid u healing .... "EVERY" 3vs3 team will have a resto shaman Indeed

is no one realising in pve you link the Main tank with two other high hp people? (thats half the main tanks damage to someone else! and main tanks mitigate most of the damage of the blow so this would be AMAZING... right now i can get hit sometimes for 8-10k
that means i get 4-5k and two other ppl get hit with 2-2.5k which is nothing really!
this would be awesome!
pretty much would always guarantee that class at least 1-2 slots

Except main tanks sometimes take damage that will break the link, as I mentioned above. So the ability is not as useful for raid tanks as you might think.
