Merciless Gladiator's Maul
is more of a cat dps weapon, imo i would stick it out and go for the
Earthwarden
, if i could find out what your current weapon is, it would help out a lot..

Bull, you could always buy

from the auction house until you get the earthwarden
Also, pvp gear is fine for tanking gear, just not for the weapon.

is really cheap now at just over 9k honor, and they'll last you a long time (put either solid star of elune or a Shifting Nightseye in it (solid star is probably best).
Also, the
shattered sun neck piece
is also a good tanking item if you're already at uncrittable. The expertise on that, and on earthwarden is great for tanking. Before I had my earthwarden, I'd miss my first mangle all the time (dodged, etc.) and then DPS would start in, not realizing I had missed the mangle and then had to play catch-up on threat.
Link your armory. I'm sure we can come up with easy-to-get stuff to get you into heroics.

I'd push for the Earthwarden. Best easily available tanking weapon.
Also I'd get the Heavy Clefthoof set

It's easy to get, you can buy the mats and get a LW to make it. I had it on the first day I turned 70. The stats are more oriented towards tanking, with lots of AC and stamina and it's considered to be a basic tank set.
The Merciless S2 stuff (which you already started on) is also considered decent for tanking.
And as mentioned, the rep rewards are decent as well, and you can easily get it by doing dailies ( you need the money!) and running instance (who doesn't need the practice).
So I wouldn't feel too bad about the missing quest rewards, they are easily replaceable.
Kinda sucks about your friend stripping your account. He probably sold all your gear for a few gold. Okay so you weren't coming back, but way to blow away a nice character.

You don't need EW to tank heroics, get braxxis.
