I've read everyone's posts and now its my turn. I've played a lot this summer... With Recount. Amazing DPS is around 1000 DPS. I've seen it done by first a Warlock, and then a Mage, and then not far off at just over 900 DPS a well geared Enchance Shamman. However, if you want to never die make a druid, they're annoying. Rogues are weak DPSers. Seen some 600 DPS rogues, but no where near 1000 DPS. 1000 DPS is crazy and Rogues don't do it. Haha.

Not to pick apart your argument, Joltacks, but I've just sat and watched a rogue hit well over 2k dps on Teron Gorefiend. Wasn't ahead of the locks, still, but I think your numbers are probably based on pvp specced gladiator geared rogues ;).

this is always something thats been debated.. and its quite frustrating. See as most people who've seen my posts know, I play a BM hunter (listen before you assume Im gonna say "ZOMG BM PWNS ALL") and on
MY
server there are not any decent rogues. I do not thinnk I have heard of a rogue breaking 1.5k on ANY fight. Granted we only have one guild to down a boss in Sunwel but still... and if its been done... Ive never heard of it. On Gnomeregan BM hunters generally beat out all. This makes the "which class is the best DPS" argument very difficult and frustrating. I guess you can ask this... are we talking about DPS? or damage done? Because they are completely different things generally. There are locks in my guild (T5 beginning T6) that do roughly 2.3k
DPS
but they are generally behind the hunters in overall damage output. Again.. Ive seen the numbers and the WWS reports showing the different ranks. Its just hard to imagine. Aparantly rogues just plain a$$ suck on Gnomer... who knows.

Highest DPS... no such thing.
Gear, fight, player, talents, group make up... all affect it.
True. Lock with a shadowpriest in the group/raid is a very different proposition from one without. Overall though, Lock, Mage, Rogue, Hunter can all do excellent dps and given equal gear end up topping the charts on different fights.
If I had to pick one I'd say Rogue. Just because they're easy to get groups with because of Sap and spell interrupts, and so easier to gear than say a Hunter.

PvP epics have no hit rating and relatively low attack power but decent crit. PvP epics have resilience. Resilience is not needed for DPS/Healer classes in PvE. I can see resilience being useful for a tank though.

Considering it's an alt, I think you should factor in that the gear level will probably (You didn't mention, so I assume) be quite low.
With a bit of skill involved, I'd say Hunter. They can perform extremely well if you know what your class improves from (buff wise) at relatively low gear level. Not to mention that at even higher gear level they are one of the top dps classes in the game, take for example this
scoreboard
, it ranks the top dpsers for the Teron Gorefiend fight. Hunters clocking in at an amazing 3.7k dps! Note that it's endgame gear. However it's also ranked second on average dps, only beaten by rogues, which I myself believe to be due to raid setups not favoring the hunter and players that don't know what they're doing. The list of
average dps
for classes is in my opinion a bit biased because of the previously mentioned reason, but should give you ideas on other classes as well.
Check out the other charts as well, it's pretty interesting.

My 65 shadow priest out-DPSed two level 70s (hunter and mage) this past week while they helped my run UB. You may argue that they were terrible players (and they were) but the fact stands...

3.7k DPS is Bulloney. An epicced out destro lock will do about 1.4k DPS and that my friends is insane. Tanks have a hard time holding aggro with that much DPS. Don't believe these people when they say a hunter will do 3.7k DPS and a rogue even more. Lawl.

Hahaha, well you say "epicced out", the 3.7k dps was done by a hunter in SK, weeks after they had killed Kil'Jaeden. So not your average geared hunter. Here's his armory link:
http://eu.wowarmory.com/character-sheet.xml?r=Vek%27nilash&n=Hunex
Note though that it's on Teron Gorefiend, there's not much else to do (if you don't get the ghost) but stand still and dps. The fight lasted about a minute, with
constant
bloodlust, drum rotation, food and scroll buffs. 3k is clearly not impossible.
And about the 1.4k DPS, I've had that with my prot specced warrior on Shade of Aran and I'm not the only one. So please get your facts straight before you accuse people of lying, and for the love of god, progress higher than Karazhan mate.
Edit: I've been trying to find out another way to make you believe it since you don't seem to trust the WWS, so how about this:
The Brutallus fight requires a raid-wide DPS of 29,167 (
Source: WoWWiki
), with healers not counted (25 - 8 which is according to
WoWWiki
the MAX amount of healers you can bring without gimping the raid dps too much) that's 17 players that do active DPS. 29167 / 17 = 1715~. So that's the minimum average DPS to be expected from players that deal damage in a Brutallus encounter, or he will berserk and kill you all. I left in tanks because the DPS calculated is already enough to prove my point, while in reality it would be higher not counting the two tanks ( If a tank does maybe half as much dps as the average dpser, 1715 for both tanks that needs to be pushed out on the others, so 1715 / 15 = 114~ extra.). After that you can draw conclusions that not all classes will perform as well as others, some ending up below 1715 and some ending up above. 2k DPS is to be expected from a sunwell geared lock, hunter or rogue on this fight.
Tanks have a hard time holding aggro with that much DPS.
Tanks scale with gear as well my friend, and in Sunwell your tanks will be taking vast amounts of damage, giving them alot more rage to get rid of. So if 1715 DPS is needed to kill Brutallus, how have people killed him if the tanks can't hold aggro?
So feel free to show me a lock that can't do more than 2k dps in sunwell gear, and I'll tell you what he's doing wrong.
