Is there a way to make it stop automatically directing me to classic pages when I look up items from vanilla? It is incredibly annoying to have to tell it to go to the Live view every time I look up an item.

Not right now. We made this change intentionally due to a number of users, and I mean a lot of users, who actually wanted Classic inadvertently being on the wrong page. It's a temporary measure. We made a change today though so that you can still access 'Live' but you'll have to click that button if that's the case. This only affects database pages with Patch 1.13 or older. Thank you and sorry for the inconvenience in the meantime.

Some pages don't go to live versions. What a joke. (well, maybe in other languages)

Ick. Couldn't you add a toggle to set for default? Even for logged-in users?

Can confirm some pages just outright refuse to load a 'Live' version. On items like
Blade of Eternal Darkness
you can at least hover over 'Live' to see it kick back a mouseover but clicking it just reloads Classic.
Echoing sentiment this kind of behavior should be a toggle, since there already is an option at top of page to decide which version to view.

I'll add that Wowhead stuffed itself with all kinds of notifications to Classic users, including an obnoxious animated box on every single Classic-applicable page. If a Classic user can't figure it out with all that help... maybe they need to make mistakes a few times.
You're not helping them learn. You're teaching them to expect the site to act a certain way, and that won't always work (I hope). Then you'll have to deal with the learning curve all over again.
OTOH, you've given the rest of us expecting the site to act normally no warning at all. I come in, click around, check out this and that... wait why is... WTF NOT THIS AGAIN and spit profanity while I jump to the top to switch the page. And then get the obnoxious animated box in my face telling me it's not the Classic version. Yeah, go figure it's not.
Sorry. I know the box is probably not all that obnoxious, but I have a low tolerance for animation on sites I need to read and I've hated that box since I first saw it.

Some pages have this issue because the names of things have been tweaked over time, and we were comparing the URLs too strictly. I have a fix for this going out now. Let me know if you still have issues with this.

I like this idea, though we may not keep the redirects around long enough to justify taking the time to implement this. We'll discuss this.

I agree. It's been surprisingly difficult to get people to realize how to get to the Classic site, even with the new highlights we added a bit ago. The new redirects were implemented because the great majority of users were ending up in the wrong area, and with Classic just arriving the hype and activity is at its peak. As things die down (which unfortunately is hard to predict a timeline on) we plan to disable this functionality. In the mean time we hope that things like the ability to jump back to the retail version will ease frustration for those not looking for the Classic versions.

No worries, I'm much the same way, and we try to keep animation on the site reigned in. We've just been trying real hard to get people to understand how to use the Classic site, and it's been more of a challenge than we expected. Eventually things should calm down again. :)

Having to manually click upwards of 20 times per day to get back to actual Live wowhead is driving me up a wall - please consider this a +1 for the suggestion above of a redirect toggle in the settings. I've zero interest in classic and the Thottbot skin kinda hurts my eyes to look at; it's just like having my eyes sandblasted every time I accidentally go to anything that existed in Vanilla.

You don't have to always see the Thottbot theme, just click 'Classic Theme' on the upper center of your page if you encounter a white page to go back to the dark theme (it'll stay that way unless you switch it back again).

It really sucks having pages on this site become essentially unusable just so a rush of new traffic can be coddled. I don't see why their problem has to create a new, separate problem, primarily when their problem is borne of ignorance. This was entirely the wrong way to go about things; if these people can't figure out how to use the site, especially when it's shoved in their faces the moment they load a page, that's on them. Or at least, it should be. Thanks for making the site worse, and it being worse only temporarily does nothing for me today.

As soon as I have read a classic news article (And got redirected to the classic site) I see *no* way to come back to
www.wowhead.com
other than type it in the browser navigation bar.
No navigation back, nowhere.
Maybe it is me, but I don‘t think so. IMHO it is just collateral damage of a questionable design decision.

You can click on "Live" in the toggle area to the left of the search bar navigation. This is the same system we have used to let users swap between PTR and Retail for many years.

This issue is incredibly irritating. Sometimes i cannot even find an item or subject because the page for it is lost in the nether. If i want to be on the Live site, I should STAY on the live site until I choose otherwise. The same goes for Classic. Once I choose to use the Classic site, it should STAY on the classic site until i choose otherwise.
Please do something about this asap!

Except it ALWAYS switches back to the Classic on the next search. There is something wrong with your new system if it does not act like the one you use for PTR & Live.

This is intentional for the moment. Database pages with Patch 1.13 or older will redirect on first page load, but you can force it back to live by clicking the toggle. We'll look into reverting this behavior in the coming weeks. At the moment, far too many users were unintentionally looking at the wrong version of the page.(##RESPBREAK##)

Kudos for the super-patient replies. Obviously this topic is ruffling more feathers than mine.
Actually the toggle might be a good idea even long-term, as there may be a batch of die-hard Classic players that want an option to default to that version of the pages.
It seems I just picked a bad time to go on a completionist tear and do older zones in Live. However... I've noticed a large influx of new characters as well. So you've probably got an upwelling of use of both Live and Classic versions of the same pages, driving frustration.

The live button doesn't do jack $%^&. It just redirects back to classic.

What page, after being redirected to Classic automatically and then selecting 'Live' next to the search box, is not taking you back to live as intended?

Naxxramas will give a page not found. Clicking the button again will end up taking you to the Live version, but typically a user would just close the page.
This is honestly terrible design. You guys have classic.wowhead.com, and many ways to inform people of it. Crippling functionality for players who do use the Live site should never be an option. Make it a setting for logged in users, or a cookie to remember which one you prefer, not an automatic redirect. That just leads to more frustration.

When I wasn't logged in it would redirect back to classic page. Also manually removing "classic." from the URL didn't work and I was always redirected back to classic.
Now when I logged in to reply here I finally can click "live" and actually be directed to live version. This seems to "solve" the problem, however I'd like to see it work properly without the need to log in.
Finally I can check more useful comments from Wowhead users (to be honest, the ported Allakhazam and Thottbot comments are rarely informative + newer comments on crafting recipies help determining the rarity).
