Pala tanks are viable in Kara and post-kara (most gruul runs I've done have been pally tanks for maulgar and gruul)
There are some fights where they're not the greatest (Maiden they have some significant disadvantages, but that's about all I can think of).

The wowhead paladin forum has everything you need to know about gearing up to tank Karazhan and beyond. Maiden can be tanked by a paladin (I did it, we one-shotted her), and despite the common misconception, there isn't a boss in the game that a Paladin cannot tank.

Paladins while speced Prot have TERRIBLE dps.
QFT. As a Paladin who has been experimenting with all three specs over the past couple of weeks, I can say that Tankadin damage bites.
However
, if you carry a few extra items that significantly increase your spell damage, you can do amazing things with AoE grinding.
Since this is about tanking: If you're not main-tanking a raid, and you're Protection spec, expect to either be asked to stand out for DPS on single-boss fights - or get together a full Holy set and volunteer to drop back and help heal.

Multi-Mob tanking - Paladin>Druid>Warrior
Single Target Tanking - Warrior>Druid>Paladin
...
Paladins while speced Prot have TERRIBLE dps. Warriors are much of the same, but if you have a good dps set with them, they can do decent damage while speced prot.
Very much agree, especially on those relative rankings (even if they may be a little oversimplified).
Prot paladin DPS is terrible no matter what you do. Prot warriors do about as horrible DPS if they have to DPS in tank gear, but if they get to pull out the dual wield gear, it gets... Well, passable. Druids, of course, can do better DPS in cat gear, but even in tank gear they can switch out and do quite nice DPS.
So you could add the following:
Offtanking (including having to DPS when there's nothing to offtank) - Druid>Warrior>Paladin

I'll start by admitting that I am totally biased -- I love playing my warriors and I hate playing Pally tanks. Using mouseover sunders to hold 4 mobs feels like an accomplishment while hitting judge/seal/consecrate and watching the Pally auto-attack... feels cheap. But that's just me.
But my real point is this: everything is gonna change once WotLK hits. How? No idea, but you can count on it. Before BC there were no real Paladin or Druid tanks; Blizzard used BC to revamp a few things to make Pallies and Druids tanks viable. The same thing is gonna happen in WotLK. Will Paladins stay multi-mob kings? Maybe, maybe not. Will Warriors remain the kings of mitigation? Maybe, maybe not.
The biggest complaint in the warrior community is that Blizz buffed the other two tank classes in BC, but left Warriors behind as garden-variety vanilla tanks. (Same thing happened with Priests and the other healing classes.) Blizzard may not move fast, but they do listen, and they do tweak and balance things in response to player input. I guarantee that everything people say in this thread will be mostly irrelevant once you level your new tank to 70 and get ready to walk into Northrend.
So, I think the real issue (for the moment at least) is the difference in gameplay: if you want a robust skill set that requires you to micro-manage your tank, choose a Warrior. If you want a more limited skillset -- but chock-full of really powerful abilities -- then roll a Paladin. The rest all depends on fate and the whims of the Blizz developers.

I find it funny that people are comparing ot paladin dps vs ot warrior/druid dps.
It is pretty simple, paladins dont go dps mode when not tanking, they become a dispel/healing bot.
Thing is, in most cases more DPS is more useful than extra healing/dispelling. Not all cases, but most.

Wowgeek, you're not really correct there. I've had both a warrior and druid single tank Karazhan (and the druid was better than a paladin for it, though I don't think the warrior really matched up).
There are indeed bosses in the game that can't be tanked by a paladin. Archimonde is one (due to fears), and RoS is another due to spell reflect and the need to dump mana/rage in the third phase. I would also suggest that you would be better off with a warrior MT on Illidan (to eliminate the shears entirely) and on Shahraz (for 10% shield wall, preventing irritating wipes) but these are entirely possible with a paladin.
In general, paladins are better at trash tanking and worse at tanking bosses. However, it's possible for a ret paladin to tank MH trash... making a prot paladin a toy, and nothing more. Warriors for the heavy jobs, druids for OTs, a paladin for trash and the easier tanking jobs.
