Hi.. been playing frost DK for a long time now so am familiar with the basics. Looking to make the switch from BoS to Obliteration now.
Guides don't help with the basics, so coming here for help. Please guide.
Not talking about short fights where a single Obli cycle will suffice.. lets assume we need multiple cycles in a fight lasting over 5 minutes.
Should I save my Pillar for each Obli
? Which means my Pillar CD becomes 90 sec.. which means my advantage due to Icecap talent is lost.. So shouldn't I just take Avalanche as a talent?
How do I prepare for Obliteration?
Should I be capped on Runes
before I start? How much runic power would be enough? Can i just deplete myself, then just use Empower Rune Weapon before I start? But with a 3 min CD.. can only do it for alternate Obli cycles.
Can I make a
macro
for Obliteration, Pillar, RW, Potion of PP and trinkets? Of course each would have it's separate keybinding for individual use, but would be great for a burst. Had a similar one for BoS, worked great.
If the answer is yes, can anyone help with the macro :) Am horrible with it.. Can always try editing my old one & just replace 'cast BoS' with 'cast Obli'..
Now most important question..
what do I do in those 10 seconds
of Obliteration? My frost strike & HB will give make my next Obliterate a crit.. but does that mean I alternately spam Frost Strike (or HB if I get a rime) & Obliterate? Is it worth pausing to see if I have a Rime proc or should i just spam Frost strike and Obliterate alternately? Wasted time vs wasted dps. How many Obliterates can one squeeze in?
Thanks for reading.. am actually looking forward to this since it's supposed to be a significant dps boost.
Cheers!

The whole point of taking
Icecap
is that
Pillar of Frost
has a reduced cooldown, usually around 40-45 sec (depending on crit, haste, and luck), so you can actually fit 2 pillars between
Obliteration
cooldowns. If anything, you should hold on
Obliteration
until pillar cools down a 2nd time (and yes, you should).
Depending on haste (and luck), you don't usually need to be filled up on runes and RP. Probably 3 runes and 40 RP should do, as each
Obliterate
will generate most of the RP needed for
Frost Strike
, and any
Rime
proc saves you a
Frost Strike
.
Of course you can, I use the same one (without potion, I want to control those). If you had one for BoS it should be just as easy to change it as you suggested.
Pretty mush so, get a
Killing Machine
proc, spend it on
Obliterate
, repeat until
Obliteration
expires. Definitely use a
Rime
proc over
Frost Strike
, it's better in any single way. If your reaction time to that proc is more than 0.2 sec you're doing it wrong.
The exact number of
Obliterate
s you can get in a single window depends on your GCD (and therefor haste), but should be a minimum of 4 (with 0% haste, which is impossible due to our hidden 20% attack speed increase) and a maximum of 5-6 (with 1sec GCD and some clever timing on when to start the window).
