Despite my age and lifelong love of classic fantasy literary genres (Tolkien, Belgariad, Thomas Covenant, Dune and more recently the Game of Thrones books), I'm still fairly new to computer RP games. I've been solo adventuring as I learn this game. My night-elf druid is currently at lvl 43 and studying mining and skinning, making his way through Keldrassil and he develops.
As a player, I;m starting to get curious about the social aspects that I've ignored so far. I still baffled to know what server I'm on or if that matters, but how does one go about exploring guilds? Finding a guild open to a newbie to both guilding and somewhat to play in general. How does one balance time spent playing with the guild and on one's own (to further one's knowledge of the world-lore), and also balancing questing vs. other character development?
And finally, does all guild play require character roleplay, or are first-persona questions allow (especially about gameplay itself -- "hey, how did you just do that?")

Very few guilds are full on roleplay; you would need to specifically search for that. You can find out what server you are on when you click the realm button at the top of your character list. The best way to find guilds on your server is through the official forums. You can play solo or you can join guild mate groups.

@xedcoco -- thanks so much, your answer is very helpful.
For one thing, I had no idea how to figure out what realm/server I was on, and with your answer, I now know it is Dalaran. Next time I'm there, I'll look at it to see what kind of realm it is (I think it's PVE).
I don't know if I want to spend all the time in RP-mode, though re-reading my post I can see why you thought that. I was afraid guilds would "require" that, so good to know it's more haphazard. I think it would be fun to try, but not necessarily do it all the time.
And your post also tells me it's ok to join a guild, see if I like it, and then leave if I don't. That might be the best thing to learn -- I wasn't sure how "committed" a decision joining a guild would be. I've gotten a few random invites recently that I've just ignored for that very reason.
Thanks again!

@mpwalter I don't have a lot to share about RP guilds or servers, but I have been playing WoW since beta (which seems like a crazy number of years now!), I mostly play solo (although I've always been in one guild or another), and I think you and I are of an age, based on when your profile says you were enjoying D&D as a kid. :) I play often, and I'd be more than happy to answer questions in-game if you have any. My battle tag is Geekymama#1390, and my main is Fyonnah on Galakrond. Read about BattleTags
here
if you don't know how they work - short version is that it lets people see each other and chat in-game even when they're not on the same server.

Right now, I would say look at your realm forum on the website and see if there are any levelling guilds, maybe look at the adverts in trade chat when you're in a city and see if there any guild recruitment adverts that seem to suit and just play as you wish with that guild. Even guilds that do have non-raid social events tend to take a relaxed approach so you can spend most of your time focussing on your own character. There are almost always guilds on every realm that will welcome new players and be happy to answer questions and some that specialise in just that.
Jumping in, I am also a new-ish player trying to decide how best to get into a guild to add a social element to my game play. I played WoW years ago but then didn't have access anymore. Now I am back and a total noob. When you mention finding levelling guilds in your realm do you mean on this website forum? Or is there a way in-game to seek out specific types of guilds. I'd really just like to find a group to lvl with or just play together socially until I get more advanced and know what the heck i'm doing again.

Hi, welcome back.
There is indeed a way in the game to find guilds.
If you are unguilded press J or click the guild finder icon on your micro menu bar.
This brings up a search option to help you find a guild that interests you. It's not the greatest way to do it of course, and I'd highly recommend talking to members of the guild before you join.
If I can provide any more help then hit me up on battlenet (Helvete#1148) I'm always happy to answer questions.
And finally, does all guild play require character roleplay, or are first-persona questions allow (especially about gameplay itself -- "hey, how did you just do that?")
RP is not required at all, although there are RP specific realms and guilds. It's perfectly acceptable to ask questions but if you are in character I'd probably whisper the person rather than ask in character about specific game mechanics.
Generally you can ask things in chat or in guild, although take the answers from trade chat with a pinch of salt, as the jerk factor is often present.
