Dunno. I see their reasons for wanting it permanently seperated, but I think it would've been nice if you could do a faction swap through a questline and/or learn the other side's languages and stuff, at least on RP servers...

Agreed; you shouldn't be able to change your race or anything, but just kinda betray your own faction in favor of the other. I mean hey, there are NPCs who pretty much have switched factions.
But to do it should be, super,
super
hard (and/or take a long time to do). So much so that there are only a few people on each server who have successfully undergone the faction switch. And everyone on their new faction would know about them, and maybe some wouldn't trust them.
It really does work out lore-wise.

Lore-Wise concerns? If you are going by lore then Taurens should actually be their own race :/
Cairne and Thrall agreed to ally with each other long after the War of the Ancients, when the tauren were having trouble surviving. The orcs helped the tauren claim a land for themselves (Mulgore) and the tauren brought a more shamanistic culture to the Horde.
Blizzard goes through these things and finds ways for the lore to work in the gameplay's advantage; they don't just randomly organize these things. They
do
care about lore, no matter how it seems.

I won't be completely happy with the game until the hardcoded two faction system is annihilated. I didn't like the idea when I first heard of it and as the game has progressed i have only grown to despise it more. It's grown into a festering hatred. There are so many quests that make it clear that the feud between the Alliance and the Horde is pointless and counterproductive. And yet here you are, encouraged by all teh shiney lewts, to be a mindless patriot. It's not something I can easily stomach.

If it's a plot device, then it's one that runs counter to much of the plot itself. It's clear the Horde and the Alliance have much bigger enemies than each other. Many orders of magnitude greater, in fact. If you read the quest texts, this is made clear in no uncertain terms. And yet you are stuck with "For the (Horde|Alliance)!!!!111one!1!". You can't
really
run away to join the Argent Dawn, or the Scryers, or the Cenarion Circle. It's not a plot device. It's a game mechanic held over from the RTS Warcraft games, and it's never made any sense in the context of an MMO
RPG
.

well the way i see it, me and a couple of my friends have a designated horde server, and alliance server. when we first began playing we all had chars on both but some friends drifted further towards the horde and others to the alliance, then got so fed up with the idiots on their server/side, they came back to the other characters, but still wished they could have just like paid blizz just to switch the race of the char, keeping all equipment money and levels, and switching server...
it may happen one day, just like the name change thing, watch out though, to keep people from doing quick swaps just to kill one guy over and over they might do something like a $30 charge and 24 hour waiting timer

So you're saying "human" stupidity never prevented people from banding together against a more powerful outside opponent?
It happens all the freaking time. It happens
most
of the freaking time, in fact. It even makes sense that the Alliance and Horde are at each others throats. The Alliance is mostly run by the corrupt and incompetent, while the Horde by a combination of the unspeakably vile and the impossibly noble. They're not thinking straight. My problem is we as players don't really have a choice to other than to be loyal members of the Horde or Alliance. I want more flexibility.
And, yes, I'm aware I'm thinking too much about it. But that's what I play RPGs for. There are plenty of games out there for you if you don't want to engage your brain much.
