Why? Why should Blizzard give up potential revenue?
I suspect the 9 million number relates more to how many people of signed up and loaded the game rather than actually playing it. Is this number accounts only? Or is it players and alts?
Regardless, why should Blizz be forced (by way of "guilt trip") into giving up cash? Do they not already work hard enough?

A "thank you for being a loyal customer" would certainly be a welcome surprise, but I definitely don't think we need any handouts. And while WoW has nearly doubled its content since release, I am grateful that Blizzard hasn't doubled our rates.

Blizzard should do some type of customer appreciation... a discount would be nice, or some free items for long time players... I mean they give new players 14 free days... What do the current players get...?
Blizzard makes $1.6 billion a year...
$15/month x 9 million players = $135 million
$135 million x 12 month = $1.6
Yeah, I think Blizzard could do some hand outs for current customers who've paid $15 a month since the release...
See my post in the other thread, or just read the Cliff notes here:
Blizzard has charged you for a service/product that has improved numerous times since its release, but they have yet to charge an increased rate for their improvements. Find another company that you can say the same thing about. Go on, I'll wait.
Compare them to the internet provider that you use to connect to WoW. If they haven't raised their rates in the last 3 years, please post the name of this company in this thread, because they just found themselves a new customer.

- Comcast... Internet, Phone, and TV... $99... You get more for less...
Introductory rate, which requires a contract. See what they charge in a couple of years. Also, Comcast's rate for standalone high-speed interent service has increased numerous times since I first subscribed.
- Select Cell Phone Providers - The circle, unlimited calling to anyone on any network... you get more for less...
Cell phone providers also require you to sign a contract, with hefty cancellation fees if you want to opt out before the contract is up. You still pay extra for features other than basic voice service, so you pay more for more.
Coca Cola - 20oz soda = $1.25, 2 liter = close to the same price... more for less...
20oz Coca-Cola in 2003: $1.00
20oz Coca-Cola in 2008: $1.39
$1.39 does not equal $1.00
Monthly price for WoW in 2004: $14.99
Monthly price for WoW in 2008: $14.99
2-liter Coca-Cola: $1.69-$1.99.
In this case, you're paying more for the cost of the packaging than you are for the product that it contains.
Don't preach to me about Blizzard giving you more for less...
I'm not preaching anything, merely pointing out the complete lack of vailidity in your arguments. You should also look up the definition of "analogy," and how it applies to the discussion at hand.

I love Blizzard, I love all their games, own their games, and have spent many hours on each game, and really appreciate it. But with WOW, they landed a gold mine, and they becoming greedy, by offering new customers free time, while current customers get nothing... and that's because they know we are going to pay the monthly fee already... smart? very... greedy? def...
Blizzard gives new players free time so they can play the game. I know I wouldn't pay a monthly fee for an online game if I had never tried it before. Giving them a trial is just business. You pay for the game and in return, they provide and continually update the content that you may (or may not?) enjoy. They have a plan for the game. They shouldn't bloat out content more than needed/desired from their original plan simply because they have the ability to.
You cannot take the amount of money they make every month/year and go from there. They have costs which probably take away most of those profits. Calling someone a tool simply because they don't expect a company to give them something more than what you originally planned on paying for isn't very nice.
Now let us keep this thread civil so it can remain open.

This is true. djpoling214, yes they probably make 1.6 billion a year, but lets do some math, shall we?
Take the 1.6 billion then take the thousands of people that work at Blizzard (NOT just the staff of World of Warcraft, but the people who make Diablo, Starcraft, etc. Lots are the same people but a lot are not) who they must pay. That's a big hefty sum of money right there. Then there's the cost of buying, keeping running, and maintaining the servers so they don't crash. Then, there's owning the multiple headquarters Blizzard operates from, computers for the company, internet price so thousands of people can operate off of one building, etc.
A prize for long-time subscribers would be nice, and Blizzard could probably afford it, but those who haven't been playing as long and wanted gifts would get angry and Blizzard's inbox would be flooded with complaints. I can see why you want a gift or something, but it's not in the cards.

Everyone jumps on the business end band wagon and obviously Blizzard doing any such idea would lose them money...or at the very least...not make a profit where they normally do.
But as a gamer I think some sort of promotion or player dedication idea would be excellent. Perhaps a marketing move to even give people who quit wow a month at 1/2 price could respark interest and gain even more revenue.
The the "scroll of resurrection" link on the worldofwarcraft.com page. 10 free trial for returning subscribers, plus a free month for whoever refers them. It's not a month at 1/2 price, but not bad, either.
You can also get a free month for referring someone who has never had a WoW account before.
Not exactly a free handout, but more along the lines of your "$1/hour raise" analogy.

With all due respect:
True, so where is there incentive to throw a freebie?
But as a gamer I think some sort of promotion or player dedication idea would be excellent. Perhaps a marketing move to even give people who quit wow a month at 1/2 price could respark interest and gain even more revenue.
I use paypal to pay monthly and I got a free month a while back for doing so. It's little things like this people appreciate.
If your boss came up to you and said, we really appreciate your work here a $1/hour raise. Yes from a business standpoint they would lose money...but perhaps and idea like this would raise employee satisfaction therefore increasing production allowing that company to make much more than what that 1$/hour comes to yearly.
Well, you can't spend appreciation or respect at the grocery store. Same would be true for Blizz if they tossed money at everyone. Also, $x.xx per hour (unexpectedly of course) does NOT necessarily translate into employee satisfaction or greater effort via work product.
Sure Wow is no job...but if Blizzard said hey man, we appreciate your 3 years of dedication to us. Heres a free month, thanks again! They would lose money...especially with all the people...but perhaps it will gain respect from players thus turning around even more revenue. If someone was going to quit wow...but got a month free and it resparked their interest...they could easily remake that profit elsewhere.
Certainly I would not be opposed to getting a free month here and there though I recommend friends and have received such through that means.
Many people, like myself, would appreciate Blizzard more if anything like this was done and could perhaps turn my 3 months of play into anothe ryear strictly based on my appreciation towards the company.
Regardless of my appreciation for Blizz (or lack thereof) I would still play Wow.
All this being said...I appreciate all the patches/upgrades we get. I'm not looking for a free handout. I don't expect one. But when your not expecting something, and you get something for free, your that much more appreciative.
Just my take.
I as well appreciate the holiday related content, patches, sunwell, mudsprocket, etc. I will continue to play Wow as well. At the very least we are having a lively discussion.

Oh, and my vote is for your main pack to get +2 slots for every year youve been playing. :-)
I like that idea, but I want an extra bag slot for carrying stuff. It makes sense, really...The longer you've been playing, the more crap you've accumulated, especially if your class has different gear requirements for each spec.
