I just find it funny that it's still a thing.
Pretty much.
And thanks for the wall of text =D
heh, a thread about girl gamers just isn't complete without any form of wall-o-text from our resident pancake bunny mod =P

I have two female but 6 male characters. I just choose what is more befitting for the role I guess.
You use the females to get free stuff and the males to get the job done, right?
I kid I kid, please don't kill me.

I think the gender label should be eliminated.

To be honest, it's been 2-3 years since I had an "ooo a girl gamer" event. Since the end of wrath I have been in a group of players that are a little seasoned to be impressed with an extra X chromosome, and then we all joined a mature guild with no drama, fairly well-adjusted officers and raiders, and a much more "real life" kind of social atmosphere. The majority of the times that being a girl gamer has been a thing at all was when I was on Kil'Jaeden pugging raids whenever my guild didn't have one scheduled (I was a bit addicted in Wrath). I think it's really a relatively small part of the wow population that generate these stories- mostly younger teens or people who are particularly socially inept. But they get told, and retold and so the became a thing.

Gender doesn't matter, honestly. Unless you're looking for real life love on Azeroth that is (good luck with that).

I think it's rude to suggest we choose male characters because we want to "hide." Some of us just like impressive looking shoulders.

I don't think it's rude, certainly from anecdotal evidence plenty of females have rolled male characters to avoid unwanted attention.
Naturally there are many reasons to roll a character of the opposite sex but you cannot deny subterfuge is one of the major reasons.

I take issue with the bolded word. It can certainly be
a
reason, but calling it one of the major reasons is problematic. It implies that the majority (ie. more than half) of women playing male characters are playing with the intent to deceive other players. Few people enjoy being called liars.

I have seen this subject so many times that i feel the need to defend myself. I am male, and i play a female character as alt (my main is male) why do i do that? No, im not transexual, or roleplay, or play her because i want free stuff.
I play her cause she has a smoking body (troll female) and looks great in various platekinis.

I think enough has been said already in this topic (and all others) that gender doesn't matter. And I did found my real life love through WoW. I also know many others (wow, other games and through other ways on the internet) that did so as well. I'm pretty sure it requires less luck then finding someone in a bar for that matter.

I'm not calling anyone a liar, I used the term subterfuge because essentially it is exactly what rolling a male character for the sole intent of appearing to be male and avoid male attention.
Subterfuge:-
deceit used in order to achieve one's goal.
"he had to use subterfuge and bluff on many occasions"
synonyms: trickery, intrigue, deviousness, evasion, deceit, deception, dishonesty, cheating, duplicity, guile, cunning, craft, craftiness, slyness, chicanery, bluff, pretence, fraud, fraudulence, sophistry, sharp practice;
but as you seem to want to argue semantics, then I'll retract the word major and replace it with significant.
But please in future bother to read and understand all my post, as I was speaking about anecdotal evidence, so whereas the terms implied may not apply to everyone, they did/do apply to me.

Gender shouldn't matter, but it does, to a degree. I'm female and I
have
been treated differently than many of my male guildies. Being a raid leader/GM I've sometimes gotten whispers such as "girl RL wth?", etc. I've never really cared though and I don't go out of my way to flaunt my gender for attention.
That said, I have met my boyfriend of 1.5 years in WoW, so your "good luck with that" is a bit deluded. People do meet their real life partners online, and there is nothing wrong with that.

I actually did read and fully understand your post. I went to the extreme of synonyms (and if you look at the progression of words you'll see it was intentional, "subterfuge" "deceive" "liars") to show why many female players who roll male toons for reasons other than hiding their IRL gender object to the broad brush you were using.
I am not saying that avoiding unwanted attention due to gender is never a key motivation for an individual. I am saying that while it may be a major reason
for an individual
(as it was for you) I do not believe there is evidence to support the assertion that it is a major reason
for women as a whole
. It had no influence on the male characters I have rolled.

A sort of friend of mine who used to play WoW a few years ago is a RL female (I know she's female because we went to school together) has a male character she named 'myeyecandy' as a joke since she saw so many males with female characters with rude names.
She then proceeded to make him dance at every guy with a girl character and sent little local chat comments like check out this tasty 'eye candy' & 'admit it even guys like looking at this hot elf' which kind of shocked the guys because at first they didn't know if she was a girl or not.
So some females do that, or used to but only for a joke usually.
Though I do have a few aquintances in WoW who I know are females who have a few male characters to avoid exes recognizing them or to keep from getting treated as lesser because they are female, but its extremely rare I think
