You'll probs want imp. Hunter's Mark, apart from that, I'm staying out of this one!
Good luck with the repair costs! (Not to be a jerk or anything.)

It's an interesting idea and, as all other interesting ideas, is worth giving a try.
As everyone stated, Hunters are more reliant on pets than locks do, for one key reason: when the mobs are in melee range, locks can still cast all spells (pushbacks but still castable), while hunter CANNOT shoot them.
Sure, you can trap/kite, run around and shoot, but that will simply take up too much unnecessary time.
I would recommend you to level up with normal play (with a pet) until you reach a higher level and have gathered a bunch of nice melee gears/talents. Then, only then, give it a go and see how it goes....
Also when you start a hunter, the first 9 levels will be exactly what you want: petless. Those should give you a flavour how it is like (not so fun imho).
p/s: pls don't be discouraged by silly posts by those who just oppose any new ideas. This world only evolves because people generate new ideas.

I still don't understand why you wouldn't just use a pet? I understand you might want to see if you can do it without it, but that's like playing a rogue with just one weapon. You can spec yourself and put no points in talents for your pet, but why not just have a pet auto attacking a target for a bit of extra damage?
Other than sheer novelty, this seems completely pointless and inefficient.

If you want a challenge, make a mage and gem/gear it for melee combat. Now that is a challenge. That would be very difficult considering the game mechanics don't even support that in terms mages getting enough AP from str/agi, if any at all.
